Gators may be without four linemen – three on defense – for Florida-FAU game

While the No. 8 Florida Gators may have bigger fish to fry going forward, head coach Jim McElwain made it clear this week that the team is not looking ahead this week but rather focused on its upcoming opponent, the Florida Atlantic Owls.

But when the Gators and Owls line up on Saturday at noon in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Florida will be shorthanded with as many as four linemen on the shelf for the game.

Florida Gators defense, including starters Jon Bullard and Keanu Neal, ravaged by injuries

When the No. 10 Florida Gators (8-1, 6-1 SEC) line up Saturday on the road against the South Carolina Gamecocks, the recently crowned SEC East champions may be without up to three defensive starters.

Head coach Jim McElwain announced Monday that junior defensive tackle Joey Ivie is out with an undisclosed injury, senior defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard is “probably doubtful” with “an arm deal,” and junior safety Keanu Neal is “questionable with a foot.”

Florida practice update: WR Antonio Callaway (foot) looks to be fine, Gators want to stop the run

No. 11 Florida Gators football is in the process of preparing for a pivotal rivalry contest Saturday when it meets the Georgia Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. in Jacksonville, Florida, for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.

Head coach Jim McElwain met with the media Wednesday to provide some updates on his team through the week’s midway point. Though he was not pleased with Florida’s preparation on Wednesday, a day in which the Gators also suffered an injury scare, he appeared to remain confident in what the team was doing heading into a game that could result in UF all but locking up the SEC East division crown and a spot in the league’s championship game.

Assistant Chris Rumph on Gators defense: ‘They fool you … just like the girl I dated in high school’

With April Fool’s Day approaching, Florida Gators defensive line coach Chris Rumph indicated last week that he is no fan of tricks.

He has been burned before, which is why he is taking any signs of promise that Florida’s defense has showed him halfway through spring practice with a mountain of salt.

“They flash; they fool you,” said Rumph of his players. “[They]’re just like the girl I dated in high school. She told me she was gonna take me to the prom, and I’m getting my hair cut, trying to get my brother’s car, washing it up clean and all that stuff. I’m all excited about it … and then all of a sudden she calls and says, ‘I’m going to go with your best friend.’

“That’s how they are. They flash, they tell me they’re going to take me to the prom, but we haven’t gotten there yet.”

Yes, the Gators’ defense – which head coach Jim McElwain believes is well ahead of the offense to this point – is still a work in progress, according to Rumph. Florida will field arguably the nation’s best secondary in 2015, but he sees plenty of work ahead for the younger players in that unit as well as those in the defensive front seven.

9/8: Muschamp sees room for improvement

Head coach Will Muschamp of the Florida Gators (1-0) met with the media on Monday to open up game week ahead of his team’s Southeastern Conference opener against the Kentucky Wildcats (2-0) at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida, on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

INJURY (AND REPLACEMENT) UPDATES

Muschamp confirmed Monday that redshirt senior tight end Jake McGee’s leg surgery, to repair a broken tibia and fibula, was successful with the player expected to leave the hospital later that afternoon. No decisions have been made by McGee about his future, Muschamp said, which is understandable considering the incident just occurred. CBSSports.com draft analyst Rob Rang had McGee rated as a fifth- or sixth-round selection prior to the injury.

Senior Clay Burton will take most of McGee’s snaps at tight end, while senior Tevin Westbrook and freshman DeAndre Goolsby battle for the second-string job. Goolsby was potentially headed for a redshirt but is unlikely to have that luxury anymore.

“We plan on activating him and getting him going,” Muschamp said. “That means you’ve got to get him going on special teams and get him going on offense. That’s our plan.”
