Four-star WR commit Ermon Lane ditches Florida

Losing and gaining commitments on a daily basis, the Florida Gators got news Friday night that another top-flight offensive playmaker has left the program as four-star wide receiver Ermon Lane (Homestead, FL) officially decommitted.

“No Hard Feelings But I Just Decommitted From The University Of Florida . Not Because Dalvin Cook. No lie I love gator nation. #OneLove,” he wrote on his Twitter account. “I love the gators fans but I have to do what’s best for me.”

Lane, the 44th-ranked prospect nationally and the fourth South Florida player to decommit from Florida since Dec. 25, 2013, originally pledged to join the Gators on Aug. 12, 2013, the same day as four-star defensive backs Quincy Wilson (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and Chris Lammons (Plantation, FL).

Only Wilson remains committed to Florida; he has been one of UF’s strongest pledges.

Lammons decommitted on Thursday, following in the footsteps of four-star running back Dalvin Cook (Miami, FL) and 2015 four-star WR Da’Vante Phillips (Miami, FL).

Lane’s decision is not much of a shocker. He was seen wearing Florida State gear months ago and has long been rumored to flip to the Seminoles just like Cook did on Dec. 31, 2013. Lane has also been saying for a while that he plans to make a commitment on National Signing Day on Feb. 5 despite remaining committed.

DB Chris Lammons decommits from Gators

Recruiting for the Florida Gators has been a whirlwind since Dec. 25, 2013, with the program gaining four commitments but losing three in the same time frame including one late Thursday night in four-star defensive back Chris Lammons (Plantation, FL).

A South Florida product who pledged to the Gators on the same day as good friends and fellow four-stars DB Quincy Wilson (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and wide receiver Ermon Lane (Homestead, FL), Lammons became the third player from his area to decommit from Florida in the last two-plus weeks.

When Lammons first committed on Aug. 12, 2013, he did so alongside Wilson and Lane but with four-star running back Dalvin Cook (Miami, FL) and 2015 four-star wide receiver Da’Vante Phillips (Miami, FL) already in the fold. All three of those players have left the program in the last 16 days with Lane expected (by most recruiting analysts) to follow suit on National Signing Day.

Lammons leaves the Gators the same day the program added a pledge from five-star cornerback Jalen Tabor (Washington, D.C.), who immediately became Florida’s highest-rated commitment (No. 24 overall nationally).

2014 RB Dalvin Cook flips from Florida to FSU

A year filled with devastating news for the Florida Gators ended in a similar fashion as the program lost its highest-rated 2014 commitment, four-star running back Dalvin Cook (Miami, FL), to the in-state rival Florida State Seminoles on the final day of 2013.

ESPNU casually broke the news of Cook’s flip with a graphic and simple mention on Tuesday evening during a taped show emanating from practices ahead of the 2014 Under Armour All-American Game.

Though he first made a pledge to continue his career at Florida back on April 6, when he decided to flip his commitment from Clemson, Cook began wavering as the Gators fell apart throughout the season.

Florida finished 4-8 while the team Cook ultimately committed to, Florida State, is 12-0 and playing for a national title next week.

He told Scout.com‘s Amy Campbell that he came to the final decision to play for FSU two months ago. Cook has spent much of that time claiming he was “100 percent” committed to UF. Dozens of pictures of Cook doing the Gator Chomp have found their way on social media over the last few days.

The Gators now only have three commitments participating in the Under Armour All-American Game, set to air live on ESPN at 4 p.m. on Thursday, a number that could decrease in the coming days or weeks.

A pair of four-star Florida pledges – wide receiver Ermon Lane (Homestead, FL) and cornerback J.C. Jackson (Immokalee, FL) – are also wavering in their commitments. Lane has said he plans to attend school with Cook and has an official visit scheduled at FSU, while Jackson is heavily considering Miami.

2015 four-star WR Da’Vante Phillips (Miami, FL), Cook’s teammate at Miami Central High School, decommitted from UF on Dec. 24. He had made a verbal pledge on July 27.

Cook, the 30th ranked player in the Class of 2014, was considered a must-get prospect for the Gators this recruiting cycle. His innate playmaking ability was sorely needed by Florida, which would likely have found a way to get him on the field right away.

2015 WR Da’Vante Phillips decommits from Florida

Five months after becoming the Florida Gators’ first and only commitment of the 2015 recruiting cycle, four-star wide receiver Da’Vante Phillips (Miami, FL) has pulled his pledge to the team and reopened his recruitment.

Phillips, an immensely talented instate pass catcher who is also a teammate of 2014 four-star running back Dalvin Cook (Miami, FL) at Miami Central High School, told InsidetheGators.com’s Blake Alderman on Tuesday that he has more than a year until he signs and wanted to open things up this early in the process.

He originally committed to Florida at Friday Night Lights on July 27 with Cook very much in his ear about joining the Gators. Now with Cook’s commitment status to Florida up in the air – he is scheduled to make a final decision between UF, Florida State and Miami on Jan. 2 – Phillips is no longer a pledge either.

Phillips first chose the Gators over offers from instate schools as well as Alabama and other top programs. He is ranked by ESPN as the No. 11 overall player in the class of 2015 and the cycle’s top wide receiver prospect.

Scout.com‘s Amy Campbell first reported Phillips’s decision.

Florida is hoping to beef up its talent on offense after another extremely disappointing season on that side of the ball. Unfortunately for the Gators, they may have to do so without some of their top offensive recruits.

In addition to Phillips decommitting and Cook making a final decision in a week, 2014 four-star wide receiver Ermon Lane (Homestead, FL) is also wavering in his pledge.

Lane committed alongside four-stars cornerback Quincy Wilson (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and athlete Chris Lammons (Plantation, FL) in August but has been hinting that he is no longer sure where he will play college football.

2014 WR Ryan Sousa flips to Florida from FSU

A team badly in need of playmakers has picked up a second wide receiver for its 2014 recruiting class as the Florida Gators on Monday gained a commitment from three-star prospect Ryan Sousa (Orlando, FL).

Sousa (6-foot-0, 180-pounds) flipped from Florida State to Florida just two days after watching the Seminoles whip the Gators 37-7 in Gainesville, FL. Nevertheless, the lifelong Florida fan decided to make the switch.

Listed as a four-star player by ESPN, Sousa finished his senior season with 100 receptions for 1,664 yards and 23 touchdowns. As a junior, he racked up 21 scores and 1,601 yards on 92 catches. He’s averaged 16.70 yards per reception for his high school career, which lasted three years as Sousa did not play during his freshman season.

The Gators did not offer Sousa until Nov. 1. At the time, he called the offer from his favorite team a “special moment” but remained committed to FSU.

Wide receivers coach Joker Phillips has been instrumental in his recruitment, speaking with Sousa every week since he camped at Florida back in June.

“Coach Phillips and I have a relationship just like I do with my head coach for my high school. We have gotten pretty close and I trust Coach Phillips with everything and I think he’s a great coach,” Sousa told InsidetheGators.com’s Blake Alderman on Nov. 4. “I have heard lots of good things about him and heard he has great character.”

Sousa joins four-star Ermon Lane (Homestead, FL) as the only wide receivers committed to the Gators at this time. He also made his pledge despite Florida firing its offensive coordinator on Monday.

247Sports first reported Sousa’s commitment on Monday evening.

He is the 16th member of the Gators’ 2014 recruiting class, which you can check out in full by clicking here.

Gators raid South Florida for trio of four-star commits, add WR Ermon Lane, CB Quincy Wilson

The Florida Gators‘ 2014 recruiting class received an enormous boost on Monday evening when a pair of four-star prospects out of South Florida – wide receiver Ermon Lane (Homestead, FL) and cornerback Quincy Wilson (Fort Lauderdale, FL) – joined a third local product by committing to play college football for the Gators.

Lane (6-foot-2, 172 pounds) and Wilson (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) have been planning to play together in college for quite a while and linked up to announce their collective decision during a radio broadcast on 560 WQAM.

“When Quincy’s dad took us up to Florida for the spring practice, I just felt at home when I stepped on campus, Lane said. “I was looking at the wide receivers, and I just felt like I could go in and compete and play as a true freshman.”

Added Wilson: “I felt the same way too with Loucheiz [Purifoy] and Marcus [Roberson], they’ll probably leave. I felt like I could go in there, make an impact early being that there will only be Vernon Hargreaves and three other commits – J.C. Jackson, Chris Lammons and Duke Dawson. I felt like that was going to be a good opportunity.

Listed as the No. 2 wide receiver in his recruiting class, Lane is considered the 32nd best player in the nation by Rivals and 28th overall by ESPN. Wilson is ranked No. 150 in the Rivals250 and No. 203 in the ESPN 300.

They are UF’s third- and fifth-highest ranked commitments, respectively.

The duo chose Florida over Ohio State and South Carolina, two other schools that also had scholarship offers extended to both players.

Earlier in the day, four-star CB Chris Lammons (Plantation, FL) – a friend of Wilson’s – verbally committed to the Gators live on ESPNU.

“They’ve always been my teammates,” Lammons said of the two players. “I just know we’re going to continue balling.”

Lammons, Lane and Wilson have extended Florida’s 2014 recruiting class to 16 total commitments. The trio gives the Gators five pledges that hail from South Florida, and the quintet comprises nearly one-third of the recruiting class.

Four-star running back Dalvin Cook (Miami, FL) committed on April 6, and four-star defensive tackle Khairi Clark (Hollywood, FL) made a verbal promise on June 22.

Gators defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson, a Miami native whose recruiting territory is South Florida, was the primary recruiter for all five players.
