FOUR BITS: swimming, Raymond, Rosario, Starks

1 » Florida Gators sophomore swimmer Elizabeth Beisel qualified for the 2012 London Olympics on Monday, winning the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the Women’s 400 Meter Individual Medley with a time of 4:31.74, three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Below is an interview she conducted after getting out of the pool.

Former Gators Ryan Lochte and Conor Dwyer also qualified on Monday with Lochte winning the Men’s 400 Meter Individual Medley (4:07.06) and Dwyer turning on the jets to finish second in the Men’s 400 Meter Freestyle (3:47.83). Below is an interview Dwyer conducted about qualifying for his first Olympics.

2 » Two other women were officially named to Olympic teams this week with former Florida tennis player Lisa Raymond qualifying as a doubles competitor with teammate Liezel Huber (the duo is the No. 1-ranked pairing in the world by the WTA) and center Azania Stewart joining Great Britain National Team to play women’s basketball. Stewart just graduated this past spring and will be the third player in Florida women’s basketball history to play in the Olympics since 1992 (DeLisha Milton-Jones, Tammy Jackson). Joining Stewart on Great Britain’s team are swimmers Marco Loughran and Stephanie Proud, fellow former Gators student-athletes who will compete in the Men’s and Women’s 200 Meter Backstroke, respectively.

3 » Officially making the final cut for the Puerto Rico National Team that will compete in an Olympic qualifying tournament from July 2-8 in Venezuela, Florida redshirt senior guard Mike Rosario told SNY.tv’s Adam Zagoria that he is incredibly thankful for the opportunity. “It feels great because I know how hard I am working because I want this year coming up to be a special one for me to remember,” he said. “I’m taking advantage of all opportunities. I have a very special gift that God gave me and that’s the talent to play basketball at the highest level I’m ready. Therefore, I want to thank my coach, Billy Donovan, for giving me the opportunity. This really means a lot to me and my future.”

4 » Asked once again whether or not former Gators offensive tackle Max Starks is on the radar to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers after his torn anterior cruciate ligament is healed, team director of football operations Kevin Colbert was standoffish in his reply to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “We’re monitoring his health, we’ll see how it develops, but Max is coming off a serious injury, and his readiness we don’t know yet. We won’t know until you get closer to camp and he’s had more rehab.” Similar sentiments were shared about Starks one year ago (his issues were his neck and weight), but he was called upon after Pittsburgh faced an emergency situation on their offensive line due to injuries. Starks wound up starting right away and for the remainder of the season but was not re-signed by the Steelers after the season due to injuring his ACL during the team’s playoff game against Denver.

Mike Zunino named 2011 SEC Player of the Year; seven teammates awarded All-SEC honors

The team’s leader in hits, runs, home runs, RBI, total bases and slugging percentage, Florida Gators sophomore catcher Mike Zunino was named the 2011 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year by the league’s coaches on Tuesday.

He is the second University of Florida baseball player to ever win the award. Former Gators first baseman Matt LaPorta captured the honor in 2005 and 2007.

A terror at the plate for Florida all season, Zunino leads the conference in home runs (15), RBI (59), runs scored (62) and total bases (141); he is second in the SEC in batting average (.383, -.002) and slugging percentage (.701, -.008). Zunino is also tied for third in doubles (19), places fifth in on-base percentage (.455) and is tied for sixth in hits (77).

He was named to the 2011 All-SEC First Team alongside teammates junior outfielder Preston Tucker and sophomore designated hitter Brian Johnson. Also on the team are Vanderbilt’s Aaron Westlake, Tony Kemp and Grayson Garvin; South Carolina’s Scott Wingo, Michael Roth and Matt Price; Kentucky’s Casey McElroy; LSU’s Mikie Mahtook; and Auburn’s Casey McElroy.

His Gators teammates – senior second baseman Josh Adams, sophomore shortstop Nolan Fontana and sophomore right-handed pitcher Hudson Randall – were placed on the All-SEC Second Team. RHP Karsten Whitson and third baseman Zack Powers were honored on the 2011 SEC All-Freshman Team, and both Zunino and Fontana earned spots on the 2011 SEC All-Defensive Team.

It is the first time in UF history that student-athletes representing the school have won SEC Player of the Year in baseball and softball (senior left fielder Kelsey Bruder). Florida now has 11 SEC Players of the Year for 2010-11 also including Chandler Parsons (men’s basketball), Bank Vongvanij (men’s golf), Christian Taylor (men’s indoor track & field), Will Claye (men’s outdoor track & field), Conor Dwyer (men’s swimming), Monica Dodson (women’s diving), Kathryn Williamson (women’s soccer), Allie Will (women’s tennis) and Kelly Murphy (volleyball). Gators lacrosse’s Kitty Cullen also won ALC Player of the Year.

FOUR BITS: FSU wins, awards, Sloan, Brombacher

1 » Competing in their fourth and final game of the season, No. 8 Florida State Seminoles baseball (24-9) once again took it to the No. 4 Florida Gators (26-8), turning miscues into runs to prevail 3-1 on Tuesday night in Tallahassee, FL in front of a sold out crowd of 6,357 fans. Florida State improved to 3-1 against Florida with the win; the Gators’ only victory came via a hard-fought 5-4 win in extra innings. Junior left-handed pitcher Alex Panteliodis (2-1) picked up the loss for UF but only gave up one earned run while striking out five in 5.0 innings. In for relief, junior right-handed pitcher Greg Larson only allowed two hits but threw a pair of wild pitches that allowed the Seminoles to tack on two runs. Florida was held scorless through the first eight innings on the game before sophomore designated hitter Brian Johnson (2-4, RBI) knocked home junior right fielder Preston Tucker (1-3, R, BB) in the ninth.

2 » The Second Annual Florida Letterman Awards were held on Monday with a number of UF’s student-athletes bringing home honors. The list of award recipients and their respective sports is below:

- Mr. & Ms. Orange & Blue: Christian Taylor (track and field), Megan Bush (softball)

- Comeback Athlete of the Year: Tommy Toledo (baseball), McKenzie Barney (soccer)

3 » Gators gymnastics got great news Wednesday as Bridget Sloan, the all-around champion at the 2009 World Championships and an Olympian for the United States in 2008, signed a letter of intent to join the University of Florida. Sloan will not enroll at UF for more than a year as she will first pursue participation in the 2012 London Olympics. “Making this decision was by far one of the hardest of my life, and I took a long time and put a lot of thought into it, but it came down to where I felt the most comfortable,” Sloan said according to a Florida release. “Florida seemed like the best place for me academically and for gymnastics, and I’m excited to be a Gator.”

4 » Gators softball’s senior ace RHP, Brombacher may see the mound for the first time in more than a month on Wednesday against Florida International. She has been out of action with a number of lingering arm injuries, most recently having problems with her bicep. However, according to the Independent Florida Alligator, Brombacher “threw almost every day last week” and could be back on the diamond Wednesday either as the starter or in a limited role.
