1 » Early Friday morning, Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow sat down with Hannah Storm for another interview, this one mostly about the 2011 season. Though the below video is only a clip of the interview, it will be aired in full on ESPN‘s SportsCenter on Friday. If/when the network makes it available online, OGGOA will update this thread with a video of the complete interview.

2 » Former Florida Gators linebacker Brandon Hicks has agreed to a futures contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2012 season. His former Florida teammate and current Pittsburgh tackle Marcus Gilbert confirmed the signing to OGGOA on Friday via Twitter. An undrafted free agent in 2011, Hicks was signed by the Buffalo Bills in the lockout-shortened offseason but was waived during final cuts and did not make his way onto a NFL roster. He is the second former Gators star to sign a futures contract since the end of the regular season as tight end Cornelius Ingram, who spent time on Denver’s practice squad toward the end of the year, agreed to remain with the Broncos.

3 » Florida women’s basketball (14-8, 4-5 SEC) picked up a big win on Thursday, defeating the LSU Tigers (14-8, 4-5 SEC) 73-64 on the road at the Maravich Assembly Center. It was the Gators’ first victory in Baton Rouge, LA since 1996 and marked a pleasant end to a three-game road stand in which Florida fell just barely to No. 6 Kentucky (57-52) and Arkansas (73-72 in overtime). Senior center Azania Stewart led the way for the Gators with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, and both redshirt senior forward Ndidi Madu and senior guard Lanita Bartley also added 12 points in the winning effort. Florida will look to capitalize on their positive momentum with consecutive home games against Ole Miss and Auburn next week.

4 » Gators senior punter David Lerner has been nominated for the 2012 Rare Disease Champion Award presented by Uplifting Athletes to “a leader in college football, individual or organization, who has realized his or her potential to make a positive and lasting impact on the rare disease community.” Lerner, who learned in the offseason that he had Chron’s disease, was knocked back by the illness but able to overcome it and wound up starting for Florida at the beginning of the season. Also in contention for the honor are Nebraska’s Rex Burkhead, N.C. State’s Wayne Crawford and UCLA’s Luke Gane, all of whom you can read about by clicking here.

With NFL training camp finally underway after an extended lockout cancelled organized team activities and mini camps, more than three dozen former Florida Gators are working out and trying to earn their keep this year. Below is a comprehensive look at each player in the league as well as those still looking for work.

LB MIKE PETERSON, Atlanta Falcons: Re-signed with Atlanta one week ago to an undisclosed contract. Peterson will begin his third year with the Falcons after finishing the 2010 season with 39 tackles, two forced fumbles and two interceptions in 13 starts (16 games played).
LB DUKE LEMMENS, Arizona Cardinals: Signed as an undrafted free agent and currently participating in his first NFL training camp.
DT TERRON SANDERS, Baltimore Ravens: Signed as an undrafted free agent and currently participating in his first NFL training camp. Has missed some time with an undisclosed injury.
LB ANDRA DAVIS, Buffalo Bills: Signed for $1.1 million this season, Davis is coming off of a torn labrum that kept him out most of 2011. He avoided surgery on the injury and will return as a starter in 2011.
LB BRANDON HICKS, Buffalo Bills: Signed as an undrafted free agent and currently participating in his first NFL training camp. Got “winded” on his first day and missed some drills. Coaches believe it was “out of anxiety.”
RB EMMANUEL MOODY, Buffalo Bills: Signed as an undrafted free agent and currently participating in his first NFL training camp. Impressed with some nice runs during day three of practice.
WR DAVID NELSON, Buffalo Bills: Signed a three-year, $1.215 million contract with Buffalo in 2010. Nelson was the Bills’ slot threat last year and hauled in 31 receptions (tied for seventh among rookies) for 353 yards and three touchdowns. He will reprise the same role in 2011.
OL JASON WATKINS, Buffalo Bills: Signed to a reserve/future contract by Buffalo.
FS MAJOR WRIGHT, Chicago Bears: Signed a four-year, $2.638 million contract with Chicago in 2010. Wright was injured much of last season but will move into the starting free safety role for the Bears in 2011.
WR ANDRE CALDWELL, Cincinnati Bengals: Signed for $555,000 this season, Caldwell may have been on the outs in Cincinnati but now has a better chance to crack the Bengals’ roster with the departure of Chad Ochocinco. He made some impressive catches on Monday.
DE CARLOS DUNLAP, Cincinnati Bengals: Signed a four-year, $3.01 million contract with Cincinnati in 2010. Dunlap set the Bengals’ rookie sack record with 9.5 last season, recording all of them over an eight-week period. He has a chance to start on the left side in 2011 but may be relegated to a nickel rusher role, coming in on passing downs.
S REGGIE NELSON, Cincinnati Bengals: Signed for $957,500 in 2011, Nelson was picked up by Cincinnati in a trade with Jacksonville last season. He ended up starting six games for the Bengals while nabbing 30 tackles and reeling in two interceptions. He is expected to start this year.
CB JOE HADEN, Cleveland Browns: Signed a five-year, $42.2 million contract with Cleveland in 2010. Haden registered 50 tackles, six interceptions, a forced fumble and a sack as a rookie while starting seven but playing in all 16 games for the Browns. He is slated as a starting cornerback and could show Pro Bowl potential in 2011.
OT PHIL TRAUTWEIN, Cleveland Browns: Signed to a reserve/future contract by Cleveland in 2011. Trautwein tore his ACL in 2010 and reached an injury settlement with the Browns. He is hoping to earn a spot on the team this year.
DE DERRICK HARVEY, Denver Broncos: Signed with Denver to an undisclosed contract. After three lackluster seasons in Jacksonville, Harvey was cut one week ago. He registered just 88 tackles in three seasons along with eight sacks and one interception and hopes to make the cut with the Broncos.
LB A.J. JONES, Denver Broncos: Signed as an undrafted free agent and currently participating in his first NFL training camp.
QB TIM TEBOW, Denver Broncos: Signed a five-year, $9.75 million contract with Denver in 2010. Tebow earned the final three starts of the season for the Broncos last year. He finished his rookie year with 654 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions through the air along with 227 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. He is currently fighting for Denver’s starting job with veteran Kyle Orton.
DT MARCUS THOMAS, Denver Broncos: Re-signed with Denver to an undisclosed contract. Thomas will begin his fifth year with the Broncos after finishing the 2010 season with 35 tackles and one sack in two starts (16 games played). He expects to start on the inside in 2011 next to Kevin Vickerson.
DL JEREMY MINCEY, Jacksonville Jaguars: Signed for $640,000 in 2011, Mincey will begin his fourth season with Jacksonville after recording 25 tackles and five sacks in eight starts (15 games played) last year. He is competing for a starting position on the end opposite Aaron Kampman.
LB BRANDON SILER, Kansas City Chiefs: Signed with Kansas City to an undisclosed one-year contract, Siler has started 12 games over the last two seasons and registered 111 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions. Previously with San Diego, Siler was also a key special teams performer but will compete for a starting job this season.
C MIKE POUNCEY, Miami Dolphins: Signed a four-year, $9.2 million contract this season as a first-round draft choice. Pouncey is expected to come in and start for Miami at either center or guard, whichever position the team needs him at the most.
WR PERCY HARVIN, Minnesota Vikings: Signed a five-year, $12.05 million contract with Minnesota in 2009. Harvin missed two games in 2010 due to health and family reasons but still started 13 contests and amassed 868 yards and five touchdowns through the air as well as 107 yards and another score on the ground. He also returned 40 kicks for 933 yards and a touchdown and has three return TDs in his two-year career. Harvin is set to be the Vikings’ leading receiver in 2011, especially now that his migraines are (potentially for the first time in his life) completely under control.
LB JERMAINE CUNNINGHAM, New England Patriots: Signed a four-year, $3.11 million contract with New England in 2010. Cunningham started 11 of the 15 games he played last season and notched 34 tackles and a sack. He is expected to play an even greater role for the Patriots in 2011 as the team adjusts to a 4-3 defense.
TE AARON HERNANDEZ, New England Patriots: Signed a four-year, $2.378 million contract with New England in 2010. Hernandez missed two games in 2010 due to injury but earned seven starts in 14 appearances. He recorded 563 reception yards (and 47 rushing yards) along with six touchdowns while nabbing 45 balls out of the air. Offseason hip surgery had him on the PUP list for two practices, but he is back on the field working out with his team and is expected to catch a lot of balls in 2011.
LB BRANDON SPIKES, New England Patriots: Signed a four-year, $2.715 million deal with New England in 2010. Spikes started eight of the 12 games he played in last season (was suspended for four after testing positive for performance enhancers) and grabbed an interception to go along with his 61 total tackles. If the Patriots switch to a 4-3 defense, he may back up Jerod Mayo but would start on 3-4 alignments or when four linebackers are on the field.
DE ALEX BROWN, New Orleans Saints: Signed for $3 million in 2011, Brown is set to begin his second season with New Orleans after spending eight years with Chicago. He notched 39 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble last year.
DE JUSTIN TRATTOU, New York Giants: Signed as an undrafted free agent and currently participating in his first NFL training camp.
G COOPER CARLISLE, Oakland Raiders: Signed for $2.1 million in 2011, Carlisle returns as Oakland’s starting right guard. He has been a regular starter for the team since 2007 after spending the first seven years of his career with Denver.
WR CHAD JACKSON, Oakland Raiders:,/strong> Signed to an undisclosed contract in 2011, Jackson is trying to make the team as a reserve after suffering through an injury plagued career. He has seen time with New England, Denver and Buffalo but has only participated in a few games during his NFL tenure.
DE JARVIS MOSS, Oakland Raiders: Re-signed with Oakland for $1.25 million in 2011. Moss looks to be a situational pass rusher going forward for the Raiders. He was cut by Denver last season and signed by Oakland as a free agent.
WR LOUIS MURPHY, Oakland Raiders: Signed a four-year, $2.198 million contract with Oakland in 2009. With career-highs in receptions (41) and receiving yards (609) in 2010, Murphy is set to start for the Raiders in 2011. He has six touchdowns over his two-year NFL career and averages 15.1 yards per reception.
WR RILEY COOPER, Philadelphia Eagles: Signed a four-year, $1.92 million contract with Philadelphia in 2010. Cooper saw limited time on offense last season, hauling in seven balls for 116 yards and a touchdown, but played plenty on special teams. He earned two starts in 2010 and is expected to hold down the role as the Eagles’ fourth receiver in 2011.
P CHAS HENRY, Philadelphia Eagles: Signed as an undrafted free agent and currently participating in his first NFL training camp. Henry is impressing his coaches and teammates with his leg and is a favorite to win the starting job.
TE CORNELIUS INGRAM, Philadelphia Eagles: Signed to a reserve/future contract by Philadelphia in 2011. Ingram has spent his time in the NFL on and off of the Eagles’ practice squad. He originally tore his ACL at Florida and has since suffered at least one more tear along with multiple complications.
C MAURKICE POUNCEY, Pittsburgh Steelers: Signed a five-year, $17.96 million contract with Pittsburgh in 2010. Pouncey started every regular season game for the Steelers last season and is the team’s incumbent starting center. He fractured his ankle and missed the Super Bowl, but the injury did not require surgery and he could be headed for a Pro Bowl season in only his second year in the league.
OT MARCUS GILBERT, Pittsburgh Steelers: Signed a four-year, $3.227 million contract this season as a second-round draft choice. Gilbert was not expected to make much noise considering Pittsburgh’s veteran offensive line, but the release of Max Starks gives him an opportunity to win a role at tackle. He could also be worked out at guard in order to fit in the rotation.
DE RAY MCDONALD, San Francisco 49ers: Re-signed with San Francisco one week ago to a five-year, $20 million contract. McDonald has steadily improved over the course of his four-year career and registered 19 tackles as well as an interception return for a touchdown last season. He started nine games for the 49ers in 2008 and is expected to come in and be a full-time starter for the first time in his career.
SS AHMAD BLACK, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Signed a four-year contract this season as a fifth-round draft choice. Black is expected to immediately compete for time on special teams and will likely win a role on the coverage and return units.
FB EARNEST GRAHAM, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Signed for $2 million in 2011, Graham comes into Tampa Bay camp as the third-down back but will still have to compete for his job. He started seven games in 2010 as a fullback and rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown but also caught 16 balls for 130 yards and another score.
WR JABAR GAFFNEY, Washington Redskins: Signed a four-year, $10 million contract with Denver in 2009, Gaffney was traded to Washington this offseason. He notched career-highs in receptions (65) and receiving yards (875) last year with the Broncos in his ninth NFL season. A veteran pass catcher who excelled in the slot, Gaffney will likely back-up Santana Moss as the Redskins drafted three receivers and also signed Donte Stallworth as a free agent.
QB REX GROSSMAN, Washington Redskins: Re-signed by Washington to a one-year, $1.15 million contract. Grossman started three games for the Redskins in 2010 and, in four total appearances, completed 55.6 percent of his passes for 884 yards with seven touchdowns, four interceptions and four fumbles. A free agent at the end of the season, he decided to return once again as a back-up, this time to John Beck rather than Donovan McNabb.
OG MAURICE HURT, Washington Redskins: Signed a four-year contract this season as a seventh-round draft choice. Hurt has been unimpressive thus far and may struggle to make the team if his conditioning does not improve.

VETERAN FREE AGENTS (who played in 2010)
LB Channing Crowder (cut last week by Miami), FB Billy Latsko (2010 with San Diego), DE Bobby McCray (2010 with Philadelphia), CB Keiwan Ratliff (2010 with Cincinnati), CB Lito Sheppard (2010 with Minnesota), OT Max Starks (cut last week by Pittsburgh), RB Fred Taylor (2010 with New England), DT Gerard Warren (2010 with New England), RB DeShawn Wynn (2010 with New Orleans)

UNDRAFTED FREE AGENTS (still available)
LB Brandon Antwine, FS Will Hill, OL Carl Johnson (signed with New Orleans, cut due to hamstring injury), DT Lawrence Marsh, WR Carl Moore

Updated July 27 at 3:30 p.m.

The end of the NFL lockout sent the league into a frenzy Monday evening as teams were officially allowed to contact and agree to contracts with undrafted free agents who were not selected in the 2011 NFL Draft. With only four Florida Gators picked in the seven-round draft back in April, a number of well-known players remained available heading into one of the most questionable offseasons in pro football history.

With contracts now being signed as names continue to roll in, a number of former Gators have already been picked up to join NFL squads this year.

Everything started Monday evening as linebacker Duke Lemmens chose to stay out west and play for the Arizona Cardinals, defensive tackle Terron Sanders got a call from the Baltimore Ravens, and running back Emmanuel Moody decided to join 2010 undrafted free agent wide receiver David Nelson with the Buffalo Bills.

On Tuesday, punter Chas Henry chose to team up with wide receiver Riley Cooper and tight end Cornelius Ingram on the Philadelphia Eagles, defensive end Justin Trattou decided to play close to home with the New York Giants, and offensive lineman Carl Johnson joined up with DE Alex Brown on the New Orleans Saints.

Wednesday brought two more signings as LB A.J. Jones found a spot with the Denver Broncos and LB Brandon Hicks [unconfirmed] signed with the Bills. Jones joins quarterback Tim Tebow in Denver, while Hicks teams up with Moody and Nelson in Buffalo.

Safety Will Hill was originally reported to have agreed to a deal with the Washington Redskins; however, it surfaced Tuesday that those reports were premature and the two sides have not spoken about a contract.

OGGOA spoke with Sanders early Tuesday morning, and he related to us that former Florida defensive coordinator now Baltimore defensive backs coach Teryl Austin had a lot to do with him getting this opportunity with a top-tier franchise.

“Coach Austin, he’s up there now, and he put in a good word for me and told them that I can plug the hole and knock people back,” Sanders said. “He convinced them to take a shot at me. They called my agent, my agent called me and asked me if I’d be interested in going to Baltimore. I told them, ‘Yeah,’ and the deal is done.”

Though he has been hoping the lockout would end and has been keeping in shape, Sanders also kept himself busy with a regular job until his future was known.

“I haven’t put on a pair of shoulder pads in a while,” he said. “I’ve been working out, doing some running, and I started working at U-Haul about two weeks ago just to get some money in my pocket until this was decided.”

Other players who could be signed include WR Carl Moore and defensive lineman Brandon Antwine and Lawrence Marsh.

OGGOA will update this post as additional signings are announced.

Legalities surrounding the lockout may still be looming, but the 2011 NFL Draft will begin without a hitch Thursday night (ESPN, NFL Network) and run through April 30 as more than a dozen former Florida Gators hope to see their childhood dreams come true.

As fans of the 32 NFL teams look on nationwide, those supporting Florida’s players may not be as excited about the event this time around considering there will be a significant drop-off from the nation-leading nine players that were selected in 2010 (including a school-record three in the first round and six in the first two rounds).

Few things are certain when it comes to the NFL Draft – trades can occur at any moment and each team views its most pressing needs and what each player brings to the table differently than analysts and commentators do. Rather than try to predict the unknown variables and tell you what could happen, we will stick with what likely will happen.

» Center/guard Mike Pouncey will be the only first-round pick, selected before his brother was and headed to one of five teams.

Unless a team decides that they desperately need a center and plans to trade into the top half of the first round in order to jump a handful of other teams, Pouncey will likely be headed to either the Miami Dolphins (15) or New York Giants (19) at their respective draft slots or to one of three teams that would have to trade down/up for him: Dallas Cowboys (9), Chicago Bears (29) or Pittsburgh Steelers (31). The top-rated interior lineman in the draft, Pouncey continues to garner high praise and has plenty of teams around the league looking in his direction.

» Florida will not have another player selected until at least the third round.

There was talk for a while that tackle Marcus Gilbert may be moving into the category of a late second-round selection but that has died down recently. However, he is the only player on the team who has actually climbed up draft boards since the season ended. His size is undeniable and scouts were impressed with his agility and strength. Gilbert projects as either a right tackle or guard in the NFL with many scouts believing he might perform better in the latter position. He will likely be selected sometime in the third round and may very well be one of only two Gators picked in the first two days of the draft.

Click to expand and read the remainder of this post.

» The future of Florida’s secondary standouts is not very “safe.”

Like linebacker Brandon Spikes in 2010, strong safety Ahmad Black has seen his stock slide going into the draft due to concerns about his speed. Unlike Spikes last year, Black also has scouts worried about his lack of prototypical NFL size and how his immense talent will be able to translate to the big stage. As Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow knows, all it takes is one team to believe in you. And whether former head coach Urban Meyer is in Bill Belichick’s ear once again (the New England Patriots drafted three Gators in 2010) or a team simply realizes that Black has a high football IQ and can significantly impact a game if given an opportunity, he will likely have someone take a chance on him in the third or fourth round.

Though free safety Will Hill has the prototypical size and speed that Black lacks, those around the league have realized he is missing perhaps even more important things like football IQ and character. His athleticism is undeniable, but there are too many question marks about him (including, simply, his talent level) for a team to take a risk on him early. Hill will be picked on the third day – if he is at all.

» Punter Chas Henry will be drafted later than he should be.

When it comes to specialists, just being picked in the NFL Draft is usually an honor. Sometimes one has so much upside that they are selected extremely early (see kicker Sebastian Janikowski [No. 17 overall, 2000] and P Ray Guy [No. 23 overall, 1973]), but most of the time they are just lucky to be chosen in a middle round. Though Henry was the best collegiate punter in 2010 (and arguably 2009, too), his draft position will be based strictly on team need. His ability to serve as a viable back-up kicker should provide him a bit of additional value but chances are he is picked late on the third day.

» The vast majority of Gators will be undrafted free agents.

Due to red flags ranging from injuries to lack of production, the rest of Florida’s draft-eligible players may not know where they are headed for days, weeks or months depending how NFL teams decide to handle undrafted free agent signings in the face of the (recently lifted) lockout.

Offensive lineman Carl Johnson and Maurice Hurt; running back Emmanuel Moody; wide receivers Carl Moore and Justin Williams; defensive ends Justin Trattou and Duke Lemmens; defensive tackles Terron Sanders, Lawrence Marsh and Brandon Antwine; linebackers A.J. Jones, Brandon Hicks and Lorenzo Edwards; and long snapper John Fairbanks could all be picked up after the draft concludes. There is the chance that a select few (Johnson, Hurt, Moody, Moore, Trattou) could be selected in the sixth or seventh round due to potential long-term upside.

Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer wanted to go out with a bang and senior safety Ahmad Black – perhaps Meyer’s favorite player on the team – made sure that was exactly what happened. With the Penn State Nittany Lions threatening to score a potential game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter, Black intercepted quarterback Matthew McGloin and returned the ball 80 yards for a touchdown to ice a 37-24 win for the Gators in the 2011 Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium.

Florida (8-5) defeated Penn State (7-6) on Saturday in Tampa, FL behind a defense that intercepted McGloin five times and an offense that did not commit a single turnover after giving up the ball twice in the first quarter. Redshirt junior QB John Brantley threw an interception on UF’s first play from scrimmage, and freshman QB Trey Burton fumbled into the end zone when the Gators were threatening to score from the one.

Rallying from a 17-14 deficit at halftime, Florida scored four straight times to end the game and did not allow the Nittany Lions to put up a single point in the fourth quarter. Meyer walked away from the Gators with a win over future Hall of Fame head coach Joe Paterno and a 5-1 record in bowl games.

Penn State jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when McGloin hit wide receiver Derek Moye with a five yard pass.

Sophomore tight end Omarius Hines tied the game at the start of the second quarter with a 16-yard end around run for a touchdown, and redshirt sophomore defensive end Lerentee McCray put Florida up 14-7 after returning a punt blocked by freshman WR Solomon Patton 27 yards for a touchdown.

WR Michael Zodrich evened things up for the Nittany Lions with a one-yard score just minutes later, and kicker Colin Wagner helped Penn State take a 17-14 halftime lead with a 20-yard field goal.

After Gators senior punter/kicker Chas Henry hit a 30-yard field goal to tie the game at 17, McGloin ran the ball in from two yards out to put PSU back put 24-17. Henry’s career-long 47-yard field goal near the end of the third reduced UF’s deficit to 24-20.

Sophomore RB Mike Gillislee helped Florida jump ahead 27-24 with a one-yard touchdown run to begin the fourth quarter, and Henry added a 20-yard field goal to put the Gators ahead 30-24 before Black’s game-sealing interception return.

Black also nabbed an interception off McGloin in the first quarter. Freshman cornerback Cody Riggs picked him off to start the second quarter, senior linebacker Brandon Hicks earned his first career interception at the end of the third quarter and redshirt junior CB Moses Jenkins grabbed a pick to end the game.

Henry, who helped Florida manage its field position all game and was clutch in his field goals, had an uncharacteristic 14-yard punt go out of bounds starting at the Gators 23 and failed in a fake punt opportunity. With over seven minutes to go in the third quarter, Henry had a fake punt called in which he was supposed to throw a pass to wide open junior safety Will Hill Instead he tucked it and ran four yards – one yard short of the first down. He also had a long of 58 and downed two inside the 20 (one to the one).

Penn State outgained Florida 350-279 in total yards, 211-101 in yards through the air and 32:49-27:11 in possession time. The Gators outrushed the Nittany Lions 178-139 yards. Both teams were inefficient on third down with UF going 4-for-15 and PSU connecting on 5-of-18 attempts.

Redshirt freshman QB Jordan Reed, who took the vast majority of snaps behind center for Florida, finished as the team’s leading passer and rusher. He completed 8-of-13 passes for 60 yards and rushed 24 times for 68 yards. Brantley was 6-of-13 for 41 yards and an interception in mostly third down work. Redshirt junior WR Chris Rainey carried the ball six times for 66 yards (including a long of 51).

Hines was the team’s leading receiver with two receptions for 27 yards. Redshirt junior WR Deonte Thompson and Burton each caught two passes for 22 yards.

McGloin finished 17-for-41 for 211 yards with a touchdown and five interceptions for Penn State. Running back Evan Royster – the Nittany Lions’ all-time leading rusher – carried the ball 20 times for 98 yards and added four catches for 51 yards.

Moye caught the majority of McGloin’s passes, finishing with five receptions for 79 yards and a number of first downs. CB D’Anton Lynn caught Brantley’s early interception and recovered Burton’s fumble in the first quarter.

After Black’s interception, chants of “Urban Meyer, Urban Meyer” rained down from the Gators side of the stadium. Florida improved to 16-0 under Meyer when blocking a punt in a game, a statistic he has always been proud of as the team’s head coach.

The Florida Gators are currently in Tampa, FL, preparing for the 2011 Outback Bowl against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Raymond James Stadium on Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. Below are some notes from the players who spoke with the media on Wednesday.

THIS ONE’s FOR MEYER

Though the players – especially the seniors – obviously want to win their final game in the orange and blue for themselves, they all realize that it is important to send head coach Urban Meyer out on top. That was a common topic of conversation Wednesday.

“We are going to do everything possible to get this win, not only for us, but for him. It’s his last game as well as ours,” senior linebacker Brandon Hicks said. “It’s going to be an emotional time for all of us. I know he’s going to have some tears. Some guys may have some tears. I don’t know, I may have tears. Coach Meyer was a great person, a great coach, and it’s something that you can’t really exchange that for anybody.”

Redshirt senior LB A.J. Jones shared a similar sentiment. “I know it’s going to be pretty emotional because Coach Meyer’s a great man,” he said. “He’s done a lot for us and he’s done a lot for this program. As we want to go out with a bang, the seniors, we want to send him out with a bang, too. Because we know how much we’ve done for each other.”

Senior center Mike Pouncey recalled his thoughts of Florida under Meyer. “Dominant. When we stepped on the field, we never thought we would be beat. We won a lot of games,” he said. “He’s a real emotional coach. He loves to attack other teams, especially on special teams. That really gives him the edge, that he’s a real aggressive coach.”

EARLY THOUGHTS ON MUSCHAMP

They will not have the chance to play under him in Gainesville, FL, but Hicks and Jones also had positive things to say about new Gators head coach Will Muschamp in the little they have seen and heard from him recently.

“He’s going to do great here. He’s a coach that has a lot of drive and a lot of want-to to win,” Hicks said. “He’s excited about the program and what direction he can take it in. They’re going to get the program rolling,” added Jones. “When [athletic director] Jeremy Foley said he was going to be a coach in here, I knew he was going to bring in the best coach possible.”

REDEMPTION FOR THE GATORS

Hicks also sees Saturday’s game as an effort for the team to get a little redemption. “We are going to go out this last game and show what we can do, what we should have done and what we are going to do,” he said. Senior punter Chas Henry agrees. “It’s going to be a very emotional, very hard-fought game,” he added.

TURNING POINT IN THE SEASON

Looking back, Pouncey points to LSU’s come-from-behind win on a fake field goal and fourth down conversion as the turning point where things nose-dived for Florida. “That was the swinging point of our season. If we would have won that game, we would have had all the momentum going into homecoming to beat Mississippi State,” he said. “It came down to them faking a field goal and getting a first down on fourth and four. That’s how the game swung. Once your team has momentum, it’s hard to beat a team with momentum. We lost all our momentum especially when we thought we won the game again.”

QUOTES (After the break…)

Pouncey on offensive coordinator Steve Addazio: “We’re very proud for him. He deserves it. I think he’s going to do a great job with Temple.”

Pouncey on game preparations: “We’ve been going out and we’ve been practicing hard. They’re going to put the most prepared 22 people out there to win the game on Saturday.”

Pouncey on Penn State’s defense: “They really line up in one defense the whole time. We’re used to teams witching it up on us to out-scheme us. But they’re pretty decided on one defense.”

Pouncey on the offensive line: “We have to play good up front. They have a good defense and they play hard. So if we play good up front, we’re going to have a good game on Saturday.”

Jones on redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Omar Hunter: “Omar, he’s going to be a great player one day. He makes plays, he goes hard, and he’s a great competitor. You can say he never has a problem trying to compete with anybody. He goes every play, goes hard.”

Jones on freshman DT Sharrif Floyd: “He’s coming along great with our defense. He wants to be on the field, he wants to play. For a young guy to have so much want-to and drive to do it, he’s one of those guys that you can really count on to make plays.”

Jones on freshman LB/defensive end Ronald Powell: “He wants to learn as well. He feels that he should be playing, and I feel that way too because he’s a great guy, a great kid that wants to go ahead make plays and do what he can to help us win.”

Jones on Meyer: “To tell you the truth, that man’s a genius. I think he’ll do OK or great at whatever he decides to do.”

Henry on working with Meyer: “Very special. He’s my special teams coach, he’s my punting coach. He’s a great person. I’ve learned so much from him on and off the field. I really admire everything he’s done.”
