Fastbreak: No. 12 Florida tops Richmond 67-58

The No. 12 Florida Gators (11-2) started 2014 off with a hard-fought victory, taking down the Richmond Spiders (10-5) on Saturday afternoon at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville, FL. Florida won 67-58 despite leading by just two points at halftime and trailing by as many as four in the second half.

The Gators improved to 5-2 this season in single-digit decisions and have now won both 23-straight contests and 24 consecutive non-conference games in the O’Dome.

OnlyGators.com breaks down UF’s 11th win with The Fastbreak.

It was over when: Redshirt sophomore forward Dorian Finney-Smith drained a much-needed three-pointer that extended the Gators’ advantage to eight points with 3:31 left in the game. The triple was just his second basket of the contest as Finney-Smith finished with five points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Prominent player: Florida’s win on Saturday was very much a team effort, but senior center Patric Young was the most consistent player over 40 minutes, playing great post defense while scoring efficiently with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. He also hit 3-of-6 free throws (including an and-one conversion) and grabbed six rebounds on the afternoon.

Standout stat: UF’s three-point shooting left much to be desired early in the contest. The Gators started just 1-of-11 from downtown while the Spiders began the game 6-of-14 and held a four-point lead with 13 minutes remaining. Florida went 4-for-8 from deep to close out the contest, while Richmond drained 3-of-9 threes over the final 13 minutes.

Check out the second half of The Fastbreak after the, well, break.

» Florida is 2-2 against ranked opponents this season with both losses coming in true road games and the victories occurring in a home contest and neutral-site game.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF TIME OFF

The Gators will only have played four games in 32 days by the time they take the court on Saturday afternoon against the Spiders, and Donovan is pleased at how much the team has improved in that time. UF has won four-straight contests, including consecutive games against top 25-ranked opponents, and outscored its last two competitors by a combined total of 142-83.

He is especially impressed at what the Gators have been able to accomplish over the last two-plus weeks while school has been out following the conclusion of the fall semester.

“They’ve done a good job. We’ve had a good week here of practice. We’ve been able to do a lot of different things. Any time you don’t have school going on and they’re basically totally focused on the basketball piece of it, you have a chance I think to really grow and develop,” he explained.

“This last month for us has been a time where we have a week in between games where we’ve been able to improve and get better. … I’d say the last two weeks, as we’ve gotten a little bit more healthy, we’ve been able to work on different things in practice. And I think it’s worked well for us.”

Florida fights off, eventually falls to Xavier 76-64

Coming off of a tough conference loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday, the Florida Gators (17-8) hoped to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive with a win in a rare late season out-of-conference game against the Xavier Musketeers (17-7). While the Gators did their best to fend off the Musketeers throughout the game, the overwhelming size and speed of their opponent coupled with their own inconsistency would make their efforts moot in the end Saturday night in Gainesville, FL, at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
