RB recruit Mike Davis decommits from Florida

By Adam Silverstein
December 4, 2011

Days after saying he had gone from fully committed to undecided about his pledge, four-star running back Mike Davis (Stone Mountain, GA) announced that he has decommited from the Florida Gators effectively immediately.

“No longer committed to florida,” Davis said Sunday evening via his Twitter account.

The brother of former Clemson RB James Davis, he was one of two rushers Florida had committed for 2012; four-star Matt Jones (Seffner, FL), who some consider to be the best running back in the state of Florida, committed days before Davis did in February.

Early Sunday evening, Davis tweeted that “its funny when you look a coach in the eye in see right through the B.S. dey be feedin you,” which was perhaps a take at how the Gators have been recruiting him recently.

Davis recently entered the Rivals100 at No. 95 after rushing for 1,928 yards and 21 touchdowns on 2013 carries as a high school senior.

“Things happened; there was a misunderstanding with the Florida coaches,” Davis told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I can’t comment on what went wrong. It just wasn’t meant to be. Some things happened, and I don’t want to comment on what happened.”

Davis said he is now considering Alabama, Florida State, Miami, South Carolina and Tennessee but does not even have Florida on his list.

“I’m not feeling any emotions about it. It’s over with [Florida],” he told the paper.

His high school teammate, three-star defensive tackle JaFar Mann, remains committed to the Gators as of press time.

    disaster

  2. MG says:

Let the posts begin. We didn’t really want or need Davis. Muschamp is well on his way to an unmitigated disaster. Recruiting is his only hope to build support after this season.

  3. ken says:

Wonder if that means Marshall is not a Gator. We still have Jones. So to me Marshall or Davis would be nice to have with Davis.

  4. ken says:

*now a Gator, dang it. I wonder if Marshall is now a Gator. And nice to have with Jones. Just fubar’d that all up.

Marshall and Jones or Davis and Jones is a nice get for this class.
Word was Davis was upset UF was going after Marshall since there was a chance to get him.

    • David says:

Davis was upset because the Gators sent 4 coaches to see Marshall, including CWM and Weis, and they only sent one coach to see him. He is unsulted

  5. SC_Gator says:

Not happy of course but this one actually doesn’t surprise me.

  6. Gio Showtime says:

I can’t believe the coaches let this guy go for Marshall. We need Davis, we don’t need Marshall, we need a back like Davis who runs closer to the ground and not so upright. I’m disappointed in this staff and am THIS close to giving up on the team. Even if the staff was positive on Marshall, you never count your chickens before they hatch in recruiting

  7. Aligator says:

this guys is too small anyways … let him go …

I`m watching the demise of my beloved gators….right before my eyes…….no…this post is not about losing one recruit or even two…this is about the direction we are headed….the arrow is pointing down…and now Ohio State gets to demoralize us on top of this huge footlong monster turd of a season…I do not care about the 2-3 season rule of getting a team in position to compete at a high level… iif we have a losing record after our bowl game…..I will lead the thousand gator march to dethrone muschamp!!!

    • Tim says:

I’m surprised you even bother to wake up in the morning. The sky is falling the sky is falling…..Run for the hills!!!!!

    • Human Race says:

yall think you can do so much better…. what sort of jobs do you have….. if your not football coaches in College…then maybe you ought to stick your head up your…….. instead of bickering about a coach trying to build up a BROKEN PROGRAM… and yes the gators were at the beginning of the season broken….. at the end of the season we have a GREAT DEFENSE…. with almost no backups…. we have lost a lot of kids during the season whom we dont need…. Muschamp was a great hire…..and in time he will prove it… but not with all you pansies quackin like bitches…

    • Mr2Bits says:

You people trashing a coach with a history of integrity and reputation good enough to land him the UF job, over some comments made by a high school kid, who hasn’t even earned respect, is mind boggling! Plus, based on the many recruits who fizzle out when they get to college, it’s a 50/50 chance that he will be the RB many think! So, there’s a 50/50 chance that whoever takes his place will make it! We will find another quality back – may already have one! There’s a lot of RB’s out there that would love to play at UF! I don’t hold a grudge against Davis. I do believe, however, that he is making a huge mistake and is turning his back on a perfect opportunity. There’s no school, in the country, that offers what UF does for a good RB, right now.

  9. G8trpls says:

The dude is a immature high school kid. No big deal. Now If matt Jones decommits..”it’s panic time”

    • Tim says:

Yep, pretty much. But then there is always another Jones too. Now if you don’t get ANY quality RBs…hit the panic meter. For now…you summed it up.

BEFORE WE START GIVING UP ON MUSCHAMP AND THE FUTURE OF THIS FOOTBALL TEAM, LETS LAY BACK AND THINK,
EVERY GREAT COACH HAS A BAD SEASON.
IN RECRUITING U LOSE SOME AND U GAIN SOME.
IF U AS A RECRUIT DONT WANT TO FIGHT FOR YOUR POSITION..PACK YOUR BAGS AND GO.
IM A GATOR FOR LIFE AND WE WILL BE BACK ON TOP SOONER THAN LATER.
WE ARE IN THE TOUGHEST CONFERENCE IN THE WORLD.. SO A 7-6 SEASON WONT LOOK THAT BAD.
EVEVRYONE RELAX AND LETS GIVE MUSCHAMP ONE MORE SEASON BEFORE WE TURN OUR BACKS ON HIM.

  11. g8r2012 says:

Geez, our fans are always so dramatic. Panicking after a down transition year and now criticizing the coaches because they’re recruiting Marshall who both the coaches and the recruiting services (the only two groups that actually matter) think is a better running back.

  12. Human Race says:

what has Muschamp done this season….. A LOT!!!!

created a great defense with freshman and sophmores…… created a BETTER offense than what was here last year…. and did this in the SEC against probably junior and senior heavy teams….. he will be great….. look at his wife….clearly he did not settle like Les Miles did….

    • NYCGator says:

lol, ouch. is she a butterface or something?

    • g8ter27 says:

How you can say we have a better offense than what was here last year is beyond me. This offense got progressively worse each game this year. Hell, FSU became the first team since 2000 to win a game with under 100 total yards, and they won by 2 touchdowns. This offense plain and simply sucked and there is no way around it. The players appeared to not know what was going on, were undisciplined and the play calling would get a average high school team’s coach fired. This team may be broken but it makes you wonder why, lets see, 3 13-1 seasons in a row, 2 national championships, a heisman squeezed in there for good measure and then the number 1 recruiting class whom, at the time was being hailed as the best class in history. 21 months later we are here. Hell I guess it could be worse, we could be Tennessee.

  13. Gio Showtime says:

Created a better offense?! Did UF Athletic Department employees decide to troll this thread?? WOW lol Our three biggest positions of need in this cycle are WR, OL, and RB. Up to this point, we have covered OL and RB with pretty good prospects. For us to win next year (and the year after that), we will need elite talent at these positions. I can’t even believe I’m explaining myself.

We lost our best RB prospect because we decided to send 4 coaches to visit another prospect (who doesn’t fit our system as well as Mike Davis), while we only send one to Davis’ house AND tell Davis that we are done at the RB position. That is NOT good recruiting. It’s not about fighting for a position, it’s about coaches LYING to an 18 year old.

And for all those who say Mike Davis is “small”, we need “big backs” etc. This kid is 205 pounds, runs at a low pad level, and can make the right cuts when necessary. Anybody want to tell me how much our current biggest RB weighs or how much the RB we were recruiting (the reason Davis decommitted) weighs. Marshall weighs 190, runs upright, has amazing speed and quickness. Does that sound familiar? We’re suppose to win with another Chris Rainey in the backfield?

The point is losing Davis to MAYBE get Marshall is not a good look for recruiting. We should be building a sense of integrity with our staff. Good luck with Georgia recruits after this blunder, Muschamp. Honestly, the main reason I don’t even comment on Florida threads anymore is because of the egregious ignorance that is displayed by UF fans. This is the last time I will say anything. You guys either have an extra chromosome or are too busy looking for the best Jort discount at Billy Bob’s Thrift Shop

    • CF says:

Funny how Gio Showtime starts his post by saying “our three biggest positions,” “us to win,” “our best RB prospect,” “we should be building,” etc. but then is quick to separate himself from Florida fans and insult them with the lamest insult that some dumbass UF reject UM/FSU fan came up with, the Jort. Sounds like we have a spy who outed himself or just a plain old idiot. I don’t necessarily disagree with the points he made, this is definitely not a good look for Muschamp and Co., but to call the rest of Gator Nation a bunch of inbreds jort rockers… low. I think what’s wrong with Gator Nation isn’t that we demand excellence year after year, or that we’re snobby, or that there’s douches who call themselves “Gio Showtime” and probably drifted down here from Staten Island, but rather that people like you exist, that is, those who talk smack to your co-fans. If you are a Gator fan and more importantly a Florida Alumn, I’d be disgusted to interlock arms with you and sing “We Are The Boys.” Shameful.

    • Mr2Bits says:

First off, Davis just got back from an official visit to UT and then decided to go on blast about how he could look at coaches and see that their lying. He never said anything about our coaches lying to him so we cannot assume that is the case here. Secondly, there are two sides to every story and this isn’t completely the coaches’ fault, although it may seem that way on the surface. Davis won’t find a better opportunity at playing time (which is what he wants) and I think he MAY regret this decision down the road. He’ll just have to cross that bridge when he gets there, that is if he hasn’t burnt it already.

I honestly believe he’s just mad about Keith Marshall and did this to grab attention. If he is going to act this way for us talking to the top RB in the country, then he wasn’t all Gator to begin with.

Back to the attention aspect, he sure seemed to embrace it on twitter Sunday night as he was soaking up the attention …

    • CH says:

“gio showtime”?? with a name like that, you’ve got to be a Miami alum trollling. I think everyone’s happy to hear that you have posted your last comment.

  14. Alex says:

Keith Marshall is not coming to Florida so you guys need to get that thought our of your head. It sucks that we lost Davis but we need DEs, OL, and LBs, and WRs more than anything else. Davis tried to strong arm the coaches into offering two players that they did not want and he got pissed, what more can they do? It doesn’t matter if the reincarnation of Emmit Smith in his early 20s was in in our backfield, the OL is terrible and until that is fixed we will never have a running game.

  15. Nick says:

“four-star Matt Jones (Seffner, FL), who some consider to be the best running back in the state of Florida”

Adam, who exactly is saying that Matt Jones is better than Mario Pender(Cape Coral)? Thanks

  16. John S says:

Lets just wait it out. Hopefully we’re headed for a big finish. We have to take it all on faith at this point.

  17. Doug says:

With Mike Gil., The Mack Truck, and Matt Jones mixed in with Hunter Joyer I think the Gators will have a nice refreshing running back corp. ready to make us forget about Davis and his hurt feelings.

  18. aziatic41 says:

Its still early in recruiting guys so lets not over react. Besides with the disastrous season that we’ve had, it shouldn’t be a surprise if we lose a few recruits. I personally like Keith Marshall more than Davis. Marshall is very elusive and runs powerful and very smart with the ball. Its still early in the recruiting game, so lets see if we can land some more big fish. But I must add that this is starting to look exactly like last year when Urban starting losing recruits because of our bad season..

  19. npgator says:

Without Davis we will only have Jones as an incoming RB – a positon with great needs. We have no chance with Marshall so now we just lost Davis too.

  20. Joe says:

Muschamp is just getting the future transfers out of the way before they get on campus. Now that’s progress.

  21. true gator says:

Davis got dropped for Derek Henry for next year….LOL Go Gators!!!!!

  22. g8rgr8 says:

    @GIO, I couldn’t resist this…
“Marshall weighs 190, runs upright, has amazing speed and quickness. Does that sound familiar? We’re suppose to win with another Chris Rainey in the backfield?”
You can’t even hear yourself… can you?
Rainey weighs 178lbs this year…. as a Senior, you moron. Besides the coaching staff is openly trying to get Henry to Gainesville. He is a much better Pro-style RB, with Kelvin Taylor coming in next year… Please don’t tease us that you are leaving…… Just leave!!!!

  23. G8rgr8 says:

    Ooopps! Sorry….

  24. swiftt_tech69 says:

Gillislee, burton, jones, and joyer will hold it down at rb. We need o linemen and wrs bad! Diggs algohor etc. Losing one runnung back in a class albeit a good one, that’s not even finished, is not the end of the world.

  25. aziatic41 says:

Trey Burton is not a starting SEC caliber tailback. That would be a huge mistake if Weis started him at tailback. Burton has no speed or elusiveness to be a dangerous threat at a running back. Burton is a wildcat specialty player. He does a lot of things well but isn’t necessarily great at anything. I say we should pull the trigger and start Matt Jones as a freshman, the way South Carolina did with Marcus Lattimore.
