It was fourth-and-1 in the second overtime of No. 2 Ohio State’s rivalry game against No. 3 Michigan on Saturday afternoon when a thought once shared by former Florida Gators athletic director Jeremy Foley crossed into the mind of Urban Meyer.

“If you can’t get that far, you’re not a championship team,” Meyer recalled.

Ohio State indeed gained that one yard on a controversial spot involving quarterback J.T. Barrett, and it scored the game-winning touchdown one play later in double overtime.

This all comes eight years and two months after former Florida QB Tim Tebow was halted on a similar play by Ole Miss, ruining the Gators’ undefeated season but ultimately providing the motivation for a title run.

“We used to talk about that all the time, and I agree with [Foley],” Meyer said of the idea of going for it on fourth-and-1 in such situations. “So that actually crossed my mind. If you can’t get that we’re not a championship team anyway.

Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh certainly does not believe Ohio State got the first down, but alas, it is Meyer who won on Saturday and may be competing for a title for the fourth time in eight seasons.
