FOUR BITS: Spikes’ award noms, Notre Dame’s offer, Florida’s cupcake, Kiffin’s innocent?

1 » Florida Gators senior middle linebacker Brandon Spikes has been left off of the final ballots for the Bronko Nagurski Award (nation’s best defensive player) and Lott Trophy (defensive IMPACT player of the year). Limited playing time is surely the reason Spikes’ was left off the former, while his eye gouging incident is certainly why he was left off the latter. IMPACT is an acronym used by the Lott Trophy community for integrity, maturity, performance, academics, committee and tenacity.

2 » One of OGGOA‘s twitter followers forwarded us a rumor that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish flew into Gainesville, FL, Thursday and offered Florida head coach Urban Meyer a $50 million guaranteed contract. Our immediate responses? (1) Hogwash. (2) That’s not enough. Meyer recently agreed to a six-year, $24 million contract with UF. An additional $1 million is not going to pull him away from a program that has finally been built and filled with “his” players (along with the multitude of other reasons why he would stay). What could potentially grab Meyer would be the allure and history of Notre Dame, not that I believe it will. Let’s not forget, Meyer chose the Gators over the Irish once already – he had the option. Yuck, I just gave the rumor credence.

3 » Steve Eubanks of FOXSports.com questions why the Gators and Alabama Crimson Tide are playing “cupcakes” this week. “I think this is a good football game. I think [FIU] is a team that is going to be in a bowl game within a couple of years, a lot like FAU a few years ago,” Meyer said.

4 » Gregg Doyel, a UF alum who writes for CBSSports.com, believes fans should not be blaming Tennessee Volunteers head coach Lane Kiffin for his player’s legal issues. “How was he supposed to know that those guys would — allegedly — behave so criminally?” And Meyer was supposed to know that the players he recruited were going to — allegedly — behave criminally? Seems like a pretty ridiculous hypocritical stance to take on Doyell’s part, especially considering he trounced Meyer this summer for the Gators’ prior arrests (even though many weren’t recruited by Meyer).

Speaking of the cupcake game does anyone have any idea how us Gator fans who don’t live in Florida can watch the game? I read that the Pay Per View is only in the state of Florida.

  2. That is correct. Out of state, the game will be available on ESPN Gameplan. If you don’t wish to pay for the entire package, you could probably find it at any of your local sports bars that has the package.

    Thank you!

  4. No problemo. Thank you for reading and commenting!

  5. Mr2Bits says:

It says he was offered a guaranteed 50 mil. Thats 26 more mil than we pay him now which is fairly significant…did you mean they offered him 25 million?

  6. No, I was talking about the contract on an annual basis. $50 mil over 10 years is $5M per year. $24 mil over 6 years is $4M per year. Therefore, the contract is only $1M per year more. Granted, the guaranteed money is more because it is over a longer period of time, but at UF, Urban would be able to re-negotiate after six years or be out of the contract should he want to go to the NFL. (He re-negotiates every year he wins the title anyway.)

  7. And just to clarify, ALL of this is rumor and conjecture. So take it as a hypothetical at this point.

  8. Mr2Bits says:

Gotcha, didn’t see 10 year so thought the years were the same. Who the hell wants to be in South Bend for 10 years? Irish are idiots if they think thats what Urban is after.

  9. That’s my fault – I forgot to put it in there. My bad!

  10. john says:

ok…dumb question, but where can I buy thr PPV for this game.?? lol

    thanks

Meyer is about to sign his best class ever…..maybe he thinks about a move in a few years…but between that and his kids and wife loving Hogtown and sunny Florida….I don’t think it’s very likely

  12. John-

If you live in Florida and wish to order the game, simply call your local cable or satellite provider. You could also search your TV listings for the game that day and probably click through the buttons on screen.

If you live outside of Florida, the game is only available on ESPN Gameplan. In that case, you could order that entire package (pretty worthless at this point in the season) or just head over to a local bar or restaurant that has the package.

    Hope that helps.

Coaches draw scorn from everyone when they say one thing and do another ala Petrino, Saban, Butch Davis. I doubt Urban is spending too much time worrying about what people think about him but I still find it highly unlikely that he would say,” Im not going to Notre Dame. Ever!” if that’s what he truly plans to do.

I can’t wait till Weis gets the axe so Meyer can tell them no AGAIN and end this stupidity. It is, however funny to watch jealous opposing fans drone on and on about how it’s a done deal.

  14. O-town Gator says:

If the bozo who started that rumor on that ND blog had bothered to do his homework, at USA Today there’s a copy of Meyer’s contract that stipulates that other job offers can’t be discussed until after the season, and there’s a set window of time between when the regular season ends and January 2 of the following year – so much for that “source” and his bogus information.
