Florida Gators women’s lacrosse is set to begin its inaugural season Saturday when it hosts the Jacksonville Dolphins and Rollins College Tars in a round-robin exhibition tournament at the brand new University of Florida Lacrosse Complex.

In preparation for its first season, the Gators secured the country’s No. 1 recruiting class, according to Inside Lacrosse Magazine.

Florida will face eight of the 16 teams that qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division I Lacrosse Championship in exhibition tournaments. The official start to the 2010 season will come in February when the Gators play the Dolphins again at home on Feb. 20.

According to the University of Florida, a study was conducted by the school regarding developing trends in college athletics in order to determine the most attractive women’s sport to be added to the athletic program. “With the addition of women’s lacrosse, the [University Athletic Association] hopes to not only increase the number of female athletes participating in the program, but also to enhance Gator athletics as a whole.”
