One thing is for sure: The Florida Gators are getting their money’s worth since hiring Steve Spurrier as an ambassador and consultant.
Spurrier, who has been prominent around the program since linking back up with the Gators, will not only have the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium surface named after him on Saturday — Steve Spurrier-Florida Field — he’ll kick off Florida’s season opener against UMass by serving as the honorary Mr. Two-Bits for the game.
Following the 2012 retirement of George Edmondson, the original Mr. Two-Bits who began the routine in 1949, the Gators have been seeking former student-athletes and celebrities to carry out the honors before each game.
Danny Wuerffel, Alex Brown, Errict Rhett and Thaddeus Bullard (WWE’s Titus O’Neil) are just some of the football players who have taken the gig before.
Spurrier’s will certainly be the most exciting to date, as it will be fascinating to see how true to form he is considering he’s been around for Edmonson’s performances of Mr. Two-Bits more than anyone else in the history of Florida football.
