FOUR BITS: Grossman, Gillislee, Hargreaves, first two weeks of SEC Network schedule

1 » The list of former Florida Gators on the Miami Dolphins could be adjusted this week as the team has scheduled a workout for quarterback Rex Grossman on Monday after practice. The 33-year-old is hoping to play in his 12th NFL season after spending 2013 inactive most weeks as the third-string signal caller in Washington. He has not thrown a pass in a regular-season game since 2011. For the first time since 1992, the Gators do not currently have a former quarterback playing the position in an NFL training camp. Update: According to multiple reporters, the team was not interested in Grossman following his workout. In other Dolphins news, running back Mike Gillislee is set to miss “extended time” with a hamstring injury, according to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald. Gillislee has been making a case in training camp to open the season as Miami’s second-string rusher after being inactive most of the 2013 season.

2 » A poll of seven writers and analysts on NFL.com resulted in a ranking of the top 20 college football players entering the 2014 season. Coming in No. 17 on that list is Florida sophomore cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III, who was ranked as high as No. 4 by one voter and in the top 10 of two ballots. He was also the highest-ranked sophomore on the list. “Florida has put a lot of good defensive backs in the NFL of late but this guy could end up in a class by himself,” wrote Mike Huguenin. “As he becomes stronger, he is going to be able to shut down one side of the field by himself.”

4 » The SEC Network on Monday released the first two weeks of its on-air schedule. Below are shows that may be especially interesting to those that follow Florida along with the entire schedule, which is not yet complete as of press time.

5 Responses to “FOUR BITS: Grossman, Gillislee, Hargreaves, first two weeks of SEC Network schedule”

  1. Michael Jones says:

It is unbelievable that Hargreaves is not returning punts for us. He looked Deion Sanders-esque back there the few times he was allowed to return punts. There is no one on our team, not even Debose, who can pick and move and cut and see the field and accelerate and decelerate like Hargreaves. He is courageous and a genius on-the-field with elite skills and athleticism. USE HIM TO WIN GAMES!!!

And please DO NOT respond with something moronic like “he might get hurt.” If Bowden let Sanders, an all-world maybe all-time-best and NFL Hall of Fame DB who was not very physical return punts, then so can Hargreaves.

He’s a defensive football player who has to tackle 220 lb. SEC RB’s. He’s not a ballerina. Don’t be stupid. That’s you-know-who’s job.

    • gatorboi352 says:

“There is no one on our team, not even Debose”

Debose is an all time records breaking returner. And a 6th year senior. I’ll take him over Hargreaves for now (until he inevitably gets injured).

      • Michael J. says:

He’s talking about returning punts, not kickoffs. Debose is straight line fast, but he’s not elusive, something you need to be as a punt returner. I haven’t seen Hargreaves return punts, but don’t see a problem with it. After all, it’s not like UF has a lot of playmakers and scores a ton of points. UF should try to score any way they can. For all the talk about the new offense and this guy or that is going to be great, it’s just talk. The Gators have been a bad offensive team for four years running, and we’ve heard the same “talk” be fore each season.

  2. Dave Massey says:

    Hey Adam,

I think that should be second string tailback on Gillislee.

I agree with you Michael, If VHIII is the best punt returner we have he should be allowed to return punts. As long as he is smart about making fair catches when it is necessary the risk of injury is a lot less. He is so elusive guys are probably not going to be able to make hard hits on him. Lito Shepard used to return punts and was an absolute weapon for us doing it. Teams started kicking out of bounds to avoid him touching the ball. Those type of plays are field position and momentum changers. Whoever is the best at any position should be the ones on the field. That is the way every other team in the country does it.

  3. Gator in Miami says:

Heck Yea! I love the videos pre-season.
