The Florida Gators’ recruiting momentum may no longer be a phase of the 2018 cycle but rather just the way things are nowadays. That’s the conclusion one can come to when even players not expected to commit to the Gators wind up making a verbal pledge for Florida, which is what four-star running back Dameon Pierce did on Sunday.

Pierce (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) is the 186th overall player in the 247Sports Composite and was the Gators’ top remaining target at running back. He visited Florida for Friday Night Lights, and while it was believed UF made a strong impression, it did not appear as if the Gators were in line for his services.

The former Alabama commitment appeared poised to make a call for Auburn. Instead, he pulled the trigger for Florida in surprising fashion. Running backs coach JaJuan Seider was his primary recruiter.

“Comitted #AllBite18,” he wrote simply via his Twitter account on Sunday.

Pierce is the 17th member of Florida’s 2018 class, which now ranks seventh nationally and second in the SEC just barely behind Tennessee, which has three more commitments. The Gators were ranked as low as 61st in the nation a couple weeks ago. UF have added six of the top seven players in their class over the last 20 days, including a ton of offensive talent.
