It is not uncommon for college football fans to name pets – or even children – after their favorite players. Such was the case for one Florida Gators fan who decided to call his new puppy “Rex Daniel Grossman IV.” What the fan did not expect, however, was complete approval of the decision from the dog’s namesake.
On Wednesday, Redditor CongdonJL was pleased to share with the /r/FloridaGators community a photo of his puppy, complete with its official name.
For the record, Grossman’s full name is indeed Rex Daniel Grossman III.
Though we do not know what Grossman, the human once known affectionately by (mostly female) fans as “Sexy Rexy,” is up to these days, he has not played in a regular-season NFL game since starting 13 contests for Washington in 2011. He remained with the team through 2013 and signed with Cleveland in the 2014 offseason before being cut.
The 2001 AP National Player of the Year and SEC Player of the Year, Grossman finished second in Heisman Trophy balloting that season, though many believe he should have won he award. Grossman did start for the Gators in the 2000 SEC Championship and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. He ended his career with 9,164 passing yards and 77 touchdowns with the distinction of being the third-most efficient passer in SEC history.
Grossman was selected with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears and started 16 games for the team (including the Super Bowl) during its NFC Championship-winning 2006 season. His 2006 campaign was one of the most up-and-down seasons for an NFL starter in league history. He finished with a quarterback rating of 80.4 or above in 10 starts and 36.8 or below in five, topping out at 148.0 and bottoming out at 0.
