Wide receivers Louis Murphy and Deonte Thompson no doubt grew close while playing for the Florida Gators, so it certainly comes as no surprise that Murphy attended Thompson’s wedding in West Palm Beach, Florida, over the weekend.

The surprise instead was how Murphy exited the wedding — breaking a glass pane in a door to grab a phone and hail the police.

Here’s the story, per the Tampa Bay Times, which cited a Palm Beach County Police Department incident report.

Murphy told police he drank too much and fell asleep on a set of stairs in a courtyard at Flagler Museum, where Thompson’s wedding was held. By the time he woke up, the rest of the wedding guests had departed, the doors were locked and Murphy had to figure out a way to leave.

Instead of waiting until the morning, Murphy told police that he “got nervous and broke the glass on one of the doors in order to unlock it” and find a phone to call a friend. The unnamed friend called police, which arrived at 1:12 a.m. to help Murphy out of the facility.

“This was really just a series of small unfortunate events,” Murphy explained on Wednesday in a statement published by the Times. “With no one around, my only option was to break a small glass pane of the door in order to access a phone and call for help. I dialed the police and explained that I needed assistance. It’s unfortunate that I needed to break the glass, but the police officers on the scene and museum staff acknowledged that I didn’t have many other options. I’m working with the museum to ensure everything is properly handled.”

Murphy will likely pay for the $1,000 window to be repaired and call it a day. Police are not charging him with a crime because, well, he didn’t commit one.

Murphy is currently playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his fourth NFL team, while Thompson is a member of the Chicago Bears, his third franchise.
