FOUR BITS: Beal, Lewis, Johnson, Sturgis

1 » In Washington, D.C. with USA Basketball preparing for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, Florida Gators head coach Billy Donovan wound up sitting down next to rookie Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal for an interview with Monumental Network (check it out below). The terrific interview includes plenty of compliments going both ways, but Donovan noting that Beal put serious consideration into staying at Florida for his sophomore season is the most interesting.

“A lot of people don’t know his biggest fear going into the NBA was he felt coming into college as a freshman, he was playing with some older guys, and he said, ‘Do you think I’m making a mistake by bypassing a step of being a go-to guy and a leader on the team, because I’ve never done that? Do you think that’s going to hurt me if I go up there?’ I thought, what an incredibly mature question to ask. It was never really about the money, it was never about that. It was about what did he need to do to be the best he could be.”

2 » Gators two-star tight end commit C’yontai Lewis (Tuscaloosa, AL) spoke with The Gainesville Sun about recently doing a Gator Chomp in the direction of Cam Newton, explaining why he performed the move and noting that Newton overreacted. “Cam’s dad kept on saying his son’s team was going to beat us,” Lewis said. “When [Cam] was watching our game, he laughed when we did something wrong. So when I caught the pass and scored, I saw him at the back of the end zone and just chomped him up. I thought he would have been cool with it, but he took it the wrong way. I was just doing it have fun. I wasn’t trying to make him mad. When I was in middle school and he played for Auburn, he used to be my favorite player. But it’s whatever. He’s Gator bait now.”

Not every headline about Lewis is a fun one at this time. According to the Tuscaloosa News, Lewis has been ruled ineligible for the 2013-14 high school season, his senior year, by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. “The AHSAA ruled Lewis did not complete a ‘bona fide’ move from Green County to Northridge for his junior season,” wrote Aaron Suttles. As a response to his improper move, Northridge has been forced to forfeit every game Lewis played during the 2012-13 campaign, and he will likely be forced to transfer to a private school just to play football next year.

3 » The final 19 members of Florida’s 2013 recruiting class were all supposed to report to campus on Tuesday but one player did not arrive as originally expected. According to InsidetheGators.com’s Blake Alderman, three-star offensive tackle Roderick Johnson (Delray Beach, FL) was a half of a credit short on his final transcript and was not eligible to enroll for Summer B. Johnson will spend the summer completing an online course to fulfill the credit and will likely be able to head to Gainesville, FL, in July and begin practicing with the team in August. Rising sophomore defensive end Jonathan Bullard found himself in a similar situation just last summer but ensured that he gave great effort in fall camp and wound up playing plenty as a freshman.

4 » Miami Dolphins rookie kicker Caleb Sturgis is trying to do whatever he can to win the starting job from veteran Dan Carpenter, who has held down the job in Miami for the last five years. Sturgis recently spoke with the team’s official website and explained what he thinks of the competition and his mentality going into each kick.

“I’m just looking forward to the competition. I think that’s what they try to bring here at every position and I’m looking forward to it. I know Dan is one of the best kickers in the NFL and nothing’s given in this league. I know that coming in, and I just want to help the team anyway I can.”

“I like to think I’m calm under pressure. I try not to consider any of them pressure kicks. You want to look at every one the exact same, including practice. Every kick counts. I think that’s the mentality you have to go about, no matter what the situation is.”

Fairly ironic about Lewis having to switch schools. They put a rule in place to prevent kids from switching just for football reasons which causes him to switch schools just for football reasons.

what does “was a half of a short on his final transcript ” mean? Is it possible to not have the videos auto-play or is that subject to where you are linking it from? When I am checking from work, I don’t like to stream things through our network, I wait until I get home to check out the videos, saves work bandwidth

    • 1) The word “credit” somehow got deleted.
      2) That particular video, I could not stop the auto-play. It is part of the coding for that particular player. The YouTube videos I normally use do not auto-play.
