Though he won’t be helping the Florida Gators this season, defensive tackle Javier Edwards will be an important addition for the program’s depth in 2017 and beyond.

The junior college standout committed to the Gators on Thursday, announcing his decision on his Twitter account. He told 247Sports that Florida is his “dream school,” and he committed to UF just hours after receiving his scholarship offer at 1:30 p.m.

Edwards chose Florida over recent offers from programs like Arkansas State, New Mexico, Texas State, Tulsa and UNLV. The 6-foot-3, 350-pounder originally signed a National Letter of Intent with TSU but wound up at Blinn College as he was unable to academically qualify for a four-year university.

A former three-star prospect, Edwards held offers from Kansas State, Mississippi State, NC State and others in 2015. He was in line to potentially start as a true freshman at Texas State.

Edwards is expected to join the Gators as an early enrollee in January 2017.
