After quite a while without any movement in their Class of 2018, the Florida Gators received a massive commitment on Thursday from four-star safety Amari Burney (Clearwater, FL).

The No. 110 overall player this recruiting cycle, Burney committed to Florida over Ohio State and Virginia Tech. He will compete to fill what should be an immediate position of need for the Gators next season as the team will lose even more of its stout defensive backs to the NFL Draft and graduation.

It is likely for this reason, among others, that Burney — a two-way athlete — has chosen to play in the defensive backfield instead of out at wide receiver on offense, where the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder also stars in high school.

Burney is the seventh commit in Florida’s 2018 class, which made a jump up to No. 26 in the 247Sports Composite team rankings. He is presently the Gators’ highest-rated pledge and one of only three total four-star commitments. Burney is the third defensive back in the class joining four-star projected safety C.J. Smith (West Palm Beach, FL) and three-star cornerback Divaad Wilson (Miami, FL).

By comparison, Florida’s 2019 recruiting class already has six commitments — five rated four-stars, all among the top 200 players in the nation — and is the No. 2 overall group in the nation for that cycle.
