Florida Gators baseball was awarded the No. 1 overall national seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament on Monday as the bracket was released for the event. It is the first time in school history that the Gators have received the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament.

Hosting one of 16 regional sites for the event, Florida will take on Bethune-Cookman in the first game of the Gainesville Regional on Friday at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville, FL. Georgia Tech and College of Charleston will also play in Gainesville in the first portion of the event.

Should the Gators advance past the regional stage, they will take on the winner of the Raleigh Regional featuring North Carolina State, Vanderbilt, UNC-Wilmington and Sacred Heart. The winner of that series would advance to the College World Series.

Florida is 2-0 this season against Bethune-Cookman with victories on Feb. 21 (8-6) and April 25 (10-1). Georgia Tech is coming off a victory in the 2012 ACC Tournament and is on a five-game winning streak heading into action in Gainesville on Friday.

The Gators are making their 28th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament with the program still looking to win its first national championship. Florida has reached the College World Series seven times and played for the national title twice (2005, 2011).

Very excited to get the overall #1 but huh? Wasn’t expecting that. Also GT is a tough draw and the fact that we are in the Vandy super regional bracket if the both advance stinks. Good luck Gators.

Apparently the seeding was according to the number of players expected to be drafted in June….

I think the #1 seed is more based on the tough teams we beat in and out of confernce all season rather than the end of the year..most of the top teams slid right at the end and I think we backed into it. FSU took a hard fall last 10 games or so

The selection committee has not seen this team play in the last month. How embarrassing to be the overall 1 seed and get bounced in your own regional.

    • Ken (CA) says:

Most of the got bounced in their Tournament. FSU(2 straight losses)/Oklahoma (lost to Missouri!). I think that is why they probably had to go through the full season and check overall body of work

I am really surprised that we are the overall number. Only really following us I guess there might not be another team more deserving, but we definitely haven’t played like a #1. I hope we play well enough to warrant the high selection, but I am concerned with our play of late.

Now is the time for this team to overcome their schizophrenia and consistently show their true talent. Agree with Joe that the potential for embarrassment in the home Regional is alarming, ala the Ladies softball debacle….”Play two and BBQ” is not the end we are hoping for, but given the last month ….

We have an excellent season long resume, playing the hardest schedule in the country, with an RPI of 1. While we haven’t been dominant of late, we are very dangerous. Our boys are due for some huge games. Hopefully things work out and we advance. We need to keep perspective here, we are in good shape.

    • Mike says:

I though the our RPI was 2, but that doesn’t matter.

I agree, based on Florida’s schedule and their record against the top teams they definitely are a deserving #1.
