After going through spring practice for the first time in his Florida Gators career, junior wide receiver Antonio Callaway still found a way to get in trouble ahead of the 2017 season.

According to Alachua County Court records and a Gainesville Police Department arrest report, Callaway was found in possession of seven grams of marijuana after a vehicle in which he was a passenger was pulled over early Saturday morning for a seat belt violation and the officer on the scene “smelled fresh cannabis.” Callaway has been preliminary charged with misdemeanor possession.

Callaway was a passenger in the back seat of a black Mercedes SUV with a 40-year-old man who was also cited for marijuana possession. Both admitted that the marijuana was theirs when questioned by the arresting officer.

Callaway is set to appear in court on June 6. Florida released an acknowledgement of his arrest on Thursday with head coach Jim McElwain saying the situation is “being dealt with.”

As Callaway has previously admitted to using marijuana — though he was never cited for it previously — it remains to be seen how the Gators will handle any potential punishment. McElwain has suspended players for games over marijuana-related issues, though those always occurred during the season.

Florida opens the 2017 season against Michigan in a neutral-site game on Sept. 2 in Arlington, Texas.
