In a span of a few hours on Saturday, the Florida Gators added two more league titles to their trophy case.
No. 1 Florida baseball (41-11, 20-6 SEC) started things off by beating No. 15 Georgia 9-3 at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville, Florida, clinching the SEC regular-season title for the second straight year and fourth time since 2010.
A few hours later, No. 4 Gators softball (50-8) won its seventh straight game with a 3-1 victory over No. 12 South Carolina in the finals of the 2018 SEC Tournament to claim that crown. It was softball’s first SEC Tournament win since 2013 but its fourth since 2008. In doing so, Florida has swept the SEC championships this season after previously winning its fourth straight regular season title, its fifth in the last six opportunities dating back to 2013.
While Gators baseball has not yet clinched sole possession of its SEC title, it would take a monumental task for another program to claim a piece. Florida has four regular-season games remaining (vs. Georgia on Sunday, at Mississippi State for a three-game series next week) before beginning its SEC Tournament to close out May. UF has not won the league tourney since 2015.
NCAA Tournament action begins for softball next week with Florida likely hosting three other programs in the Gainesville Regional. That announcement should come on Sunday.
