No. 12 Florida Gators basketball (26-7) has earned a berth to the 2011 NCAA Tournament after completing a fantastic regular season that included winning the 2011 Southeastern Conference Championship.

As announced during the NCAA Selection Show, Florida – a No. 2 seed – will face the No. 15-seed UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (18-13) of the Big West in Tampa, FL on Thursday night at 6:50 p.m. on TBS.

“We are really excited about being in the NCAA Tournament,’’ head coach Billy Donovan said. “I’m very happy for our players and our staff for the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Tournament. We look forward to playing in Tampa and we will have a lot to get prepared for in a short amount of time.”

The Gators, placed in the Southeast Region (New Orleans, LA), could advance to face No. 7 UCLA (22-10) or No. 10 Michigan State (19-14) in the next round on Saturday. Pittsburgh (27-5) earned the region’s No. 1 seed.

“Obviously nobody expected us to be in this position three weeks ago,” UCSB head coach Bob Williams said after learning of his team’s seeding on Sunday. “We’re very happy about the opportunity to play Florida and to go to back to the tournament two years in a row. I don’t know much about them, except that they have one of the best coaches in the country, but we’ll work on that the next couple of days.”

Other notable competitors in the bracket include No. 3-seed BYU (30-4) [which UF lost to in a double-overtime thriller in the 2010 NCAA Tournament] and No. 5-seed Kansas State (22-10) [which Florida beat 57-44 on Dec. 18].

OGGOA will be updating this story shortly with more information.

…except they LOST the championship game. C’mon, guys.

  2. Doug Gann says:

ooops.. you meant the REGULAR SEASON championship…. my bad.

  3. Zooker says:

    2 seed, Yikes!!!

  4. Basshole says:

That makes today’s loss a little easier to deal with

  5. John S says:

Pretty nice bracket really. Hopefully we take advantage. Go Gators and thank you selection committee. Let’s keep scheduling the big boys it’s paying off.

Us getting a 2 seed is a joke…we are not that good…this squad won’t get past the second round as long as tyus is on the court..are only hope is for macklin to regain his confidence down low because we cannot live on the 3 point line in the ncaa tourney..hopefully that bitch. Slap kentucky threw at us will wake the sleeping gators up…

    • I think you’re vastly underrating this team. They had a bad loss today to Kentucky, sure, but if you watched every game since that debacle at Auburn, this team can hang with the best of them. Florida goes to the Elite Eight.

  7. John S says:

A lot of the national media are panning our 2 seed, but we have an RPI of 7 and a SOS of 5. That easily equates to a 2 seed.

    • Ken (CA) says:

well, actually that doesn’t, what does is the fact that we won the games that made that SOS/RPI possible. We have more top 50/100 wins than any other team in the country. Even UCF didn’t turn out to be a terrible loss, they ended with an RPI in the 60s

  8. Basshole says:

John, I have to agree about the bracket, it appears to be the weakest of the four. I don’t see us going to the FF, but at least the top seeds of this bracket aren’t beasts like the others. I’d love to see that rematch with BYU

  9. CH says:

the 2 seed is legit. But the we couldn’t have asked for a better region. I think they really rewarded our scheduling.
The only “media” I heard railing about us being a #2 was chuck barkley and although I like chuck, I can’t imagine he “studies up” on some of these teams.
Anything less than an Elite 8 appearance with this team would be a disappointment.

    • Ken (CA) says:

Mark Gottlieb kept saying we were the most overseeded team in the tourney, because we played no one OOC…I like listening to him and he knows his stuff, but really?

      • SC Gator says:

I’m not sure what the hell he was thinking with that one. We have, what, four teams we played OOC that are dancing? Our only loss of those 4 being number 1 seeded overall Ohio St?

I thought we would get a 3 seed but arguing that we don’t deserve a 2 based on that is just stupid.

        • Mark01 says:

Yup Yup. Our resume stacks up there with any teams in the country. I’m not sure what Gottlieb was talking about. He usually knows his stuff, but I felt he was way off base with that comment.

We got a very favorable draw. Very legit chance to get back to the final 4 this year!

  11. Joey says:

Adam what is the website and needed info for the OGGOA tourney pick em?

  12. Gatorbuc15 says:

Very glad that we got a 2 seed! This gives us a great chance to make a deep run in the tourney!
    Go Gators!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Drew 4 Orange & Blue says:

Not only shocked we got a 2 but pleased we got BYU as the #3 in our bracket…they are not the same since the big man was kicked off the team…and they are too dependent on Jimmer…Jimmer is incredible but if he has an off night BYU is toast….we’d also have revenge on our side…I hope we see them and not St John’s…Elite 8 would be a good year!!!!

  14. Malikg says:

I was surprised that Florida got a #2, but when you look at the numbers in their entirety, it’s defensible. Florida was dominant against the other Tourney teams in the SEC, plus was able to defeat 4 others that made the Dance, including 2 true road games.

However, if Florida earned their seed in part by being the class of the SEC, I’m baffled why Kentucky is a #4 rather than a #3…
