Attorney calls for Florida Gators WR Antonio Callaway’s suspension to end

Just days after Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain revealed that sophomore wide receiver Antonio Callaway and junior quarterback Treon Harris were suspended and had not been with the team since January, an attorney for one of the two men has released a statement providing some additional context surrounding the situation and calling for his client to be reinstated to the school.

Gainesville, Florida, attorney Huntley Johnson, who is representing Callaway, wrote in a press release sent to OnlyGators.com and other outlets on Friday that Callaway was suspended on an interim basis by the University of Florida on Jan. 27 for a Student Conduct Code violation as a reaction to “an incident which supposedly occurred in early December 2015.”

Johnson claims that Florida has presented no evidence providing legitimacy for Callaway’s suspension and that his firm “conducted its own investigation as to the allegation that is the basis for the suspension” and found “no good reason why this investigation has not been closed.” As such, Johnson states there is “no merit” to either the allegation or Callaway remaining suspended by the school.

No one has spoken on the behalf of Harris at the time of this story’s publication. Harris is serving his third suspension since joining the Gators.

Callaway broke out in a major way as a true freshman last season, leading Florida with 678 receiving yards and four touchdowns while also serving as a tremendous asset on special teams at punt returner. Harris took over for suspended QB Will Grier but failed to impress and may transfer his skills to widoeut this offseason.

McElwain refused to provide clarity or discuss any specifics regarding the suspensions of Callaway and Harris during his pre-spring practice press conference on Tuesday.

“We’re without a couple of guys who haven’t been with our team since January in Treon and Antonio,” he said. “They’re still doing some schoolwork and that kind of stuff, but they haven’t been with us since January, and they won’t be with us as we’re rolling, so you won’t see those guys out there at practice. Guys, that’ll be the last we talk about that.”
