For the fourth-straight year, ONLY GATORS Get Out Alive continues our coverage of the 10 former Florida Gators participating in the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine (National Invitational Camp) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.
The event, which is held for six days from Feb. 20-26, consists of more than 300 players being put through a series of drills, tests and interviews while more than 600 NFL personnel in attendance (including coaching staffs, executives, player personnel and medical staffs) look on and evaluate each of them. It amounts to the final job interview these athletes will participate in before the 2013 NFL Draft commences on April 25.
Offensive tackle Xavier Nixon (Group: 1 | Camp: OL41), kicker Caleb Sturgis (Group: 1 | Camp: PK12) and tight end Jordan Reed (Group: 3 | Camp: TE15) concluded their four days at the combine on Saturday by competing in the full workout (results below).
Running back Mike Gillislee (Group: 6 | Camp: RB13) completed his tests (results are not officially released) and participated in the bench press (results below).
Though they arrived Friday, action began for defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd (Group: 7 | Camp: DL11) and linebackers Jon Bostic (Group: 9 | Camp: LB04), Jelani Jenkins (Group: 9 | Camp: LB12) and Lerentee McCray (Group: 9 | Camp: LB20) on Saturday when they were officially measured, completed their medical exams, met with the media and continued the interview process begun the previous day. From a scheduling standpoint, Floyd, Bostic, Jenkins and McCray will be on the same schedule over the weekend. They continue the interview process on Sunday when they also take the Wonderlic and other tests and perform on the bench press.
Safeties Matt Elam (Group 10 | Camp: DB12) and Josh Evans (Group 10 | Camp: DB13) arrived Saturday for orientation.
Check out Saturday’s results from the 2013 NFL Combine…after the break!
Offensive tackle Xavier Nixon (Group: 1 | Camp: OL41)
Height: 6’6″ | Weight: 321 lbs.
Arm length: 33 1/2″ | Hand size: 10 1/8″
Workouts: Did not participate (right hamstring)
Bench press: Did not participate
Overview: A high-school All-American from a military family, Nixon looked like he was in line to be Florida’s next great offensive tackle when he started 10 games as a freshman. However, inconsistency plagued him throughout his Gators career. The fact that he had three offensive line coaches (and as many offensive coordinators) over his four years certainly did not help. Nixon has a high ceiling and a low floor. With the right coaching and motivation, he has the size and strength to be a capable starting tackle; he has also proven to be inconsistent enough that he may never be anything more than a backup.
Strengths: Athleticism, length, strength, lateral agility
Weaknesses: Feet, technique, quickness, intensity, inconsistencies
Kicker Caleb Sturgis (Group: 1 | Camp: PK12)
Height: 5’10″ | Weight: 188 lbs.
Arm length: 30″ | Hand size: 8 3/4″
Workouts: Did not participate
Bench press: Did not participate
Overview: One of the best kickers in the nation over his final two seasons at Florida, Sturgis was nominated for back-to-back Lou Groza Awards and connected on 46-of-54 field goals over those two years. As a senior, most of his misses were actually blocks allowed at the line of scrimmage. He is strong enough to kick from distance, accurate enough to be trusted late in games and experienced enough to handle pressure situations. If there is one knock on Sturgis, it is his ability to force touchbacks on more than half of his kickoffs. There may not be a better rookie kicker.
Strengths: Strength, accuracy, mental toughness
Weaknesses: Size, kickoff distance, injury history
Tight end Jordan Reed (Group: 3 | Camp: TE15)
Height: 6’2 1/2″ | Weight: 236 lbs.
Arm length: 33″ | Wingspan: 78 3/8″ | Hand size: 10″
40-yard dash: 4.72 seconds (seventh-fastest)
20-yard shuttle / 60-yard shuttle / three-cone drill: Did not participate
Vertical jump / broad jump: Did not participate
Bench press: 16 reps of 225 lbs. (second-fewest)
Overview: A combination of injuries and team need did not allow Reed to start playing tight end until his redshirt sophomore season, but he did show some flashes when he finally lined up there in 2011. He made strides in 2012 when he had two full offseasons of practice at the position and a year of experience playing tight end in the SEC. Reed finished the 2012 season as the Gators’ leader in receptions (45) and receiving yards (559) but only reeled in three touchdowns. He has proven to be solid at the line of scrimmage at times but can be a liability when asked to take on defensive ends. Reed made strides as route runner and pass catcher but often jumps to grab the ball when unnecessary, giving up the ability to gain yards after the catch.
Strengths: Athleticism, quickness, versatility, route-running
Weaknesses: Strength, footwork, anticipation, position knowledge, hips
