Gators add OL/TE Trevon Young as commit No. 29

Less than a day after the conclusion of National Signing Day, the Florida Gators have added another prospect to their to five-ranked recruiting haul as three-star offensive tackle/tight end Trevon Young (Bradenton, FL) has decided to continue his athletic career as a football player.

Rated only by ESPN, he chose a recent scholarship offer from head coach Will Muschamp over his first love of playing basketball. He has already committed to UF and will sign with the school at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Young was planning to attend Division II school Eckerd College to play basketball before the Gators convinced him to visit campus last Saturday.

According to the Bradenton Herald, Muschamp personally offered Young a scholarship and told him that Florida would like him to start his career at tight end.

At 6’6” and 260 lbs., Young did not begin playing football until his junior year of high school and has spent his last two years as an offensive tackle. He also had scholarship offers from Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Missouri and Purdue but decided to concentrate on basketball until UF came along with an offer that shook up his life.

“I just don’t know,” he told the paper on Wednesday, noting that his love of basketball was so strong that he was not in the right frame of mind to decide.

Young is very much a developmental prospect but one that the Gators’ coaching staff obviously believes is worth a scholarship. His big body, soft hands and overall athleticism give him a legitimate chance to succeed long-term at tight end.

“They had been looking at me since the beginning of the season. I was expecting to get an offer,” Young told the paper. “Coach Muschamp said he would try me at offensive line and defensive line if tight end didn’t work out. It doesn’t matter. Wherever I can help the team, I will play.”

Wasn’t jimmy graham and a couple other really good tight ends basketball players first?

I guess I am beginning to understand CochSpeak!

Hopefully the kid hit the ground running might turn out to be a good one. Then he can always put on weight and play as a lineman.

Love the move. Muschamp knows what he’s doing. The glass too often seems to be half empty for many of my fellow Gators, as we try to come up with distinctions and reasons for why the kid won’t succeed. Not sure why that is, but it’s endemic to Gator Nation. Kid’s big, good feet, soft hands, great attitude, and was Bradenton’s HS player of the year. I trust Muschamp to put muscle on this young man and then to coach him up. Look for this sleeper to blossom into a player. Go Gators!!

TE is a good project, but I think this guy can play in 2 years. A Lot!
Was a dominant LT just didn’t do all of the camps or combines. Watch how he moves on film and his feet and hands.
    Sleeper!!
