TWO BITS: Carroll to Seattle? Vol dismissed.

1 » Surprising news out of Washington Friday afternoon had the Seattle Seahawks firing head coach Jim Mora after only one year on the job. Chris Mortensen of ESPN has followed up that report with a more startling one: USC Trojans head coach Pete Carroll is the team’s target and a deal is “expected to happen.” Carroll’s Trojans recently experienced their worst season under his leadership since his first, when the team went 6-6 in 2001. Carroll would like bring some staff if he is hired by the Seahawks.

Florida Gators impact: Florida was competing with USC predominantly for five-star defensive end Ronald Powell (Moreno Valley, CA). Powell was already expected to commit to the Gators, but Carroll leaving the program (should it happen) would make Powell’s decision even easier. Other five-star recruits who could take an extra look at Florida if this move occurs include: OT Senatrel Henderson (St. Paul, MN), DE Jackson Jeffcoat (Plano, TX) and DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa (Portland OR), etc.

2 » Tennessee Volunteers head basketball coach Bruce Pearl has dismissed senior forward Tyler Smith from the team, just one week after he and three teammates (guard Cameron Tatum, center Brian Williams and point guard Melvin Goins) were arrested on misdemeanor gun and drug charges. The remaining three players remain indefinitely suspended, and the No. 16/15 Volunteers will be without them on Sunday when they take on the No. 1/1 Kansas Jayhawks.

Come on down Mr. Powell and bring your friends too!!

Yes, should Pete Carroll decide to return to the NFL it could create the perfect storm for Florida where recruiting is concerned. It would be great to have Henderson come to UF to add more depth to our offensive line, but I’ll be very surprised if Powell doesn’t commit to the Gators tomorrow.

    Good news on Carroll!!!!

  4. Mr2Bits says:

Smart on Carroll as he sees that Trojan ship going down. Wonder if ESPN will stop doming the Trojans up if he leaves. I fully expect pre-season ranking to have Notre Dame and USC in the top ten as they always do.

I’ve despised that smug bastard ever since he made the choke sign when Stoyanovich pushed one against his Jets.

But I don’t consider coaches resigning “good news.” I think the fallout that will land Powell in Gainesville is sweeet.

Come on down Floyd. We know you want to play with studs. How’s Powell and Easley sound?

Urban is going to close out this cycle in a monster way. The media has depicted the events of the recent weeks to likely be very damaging to this recruiting class. I don’t see where.

How many recruits can we sign this year? Does the number increase if more Gators declare for the NFL drat? Great website–Thanks.

I have a feeling ncaa sanctions are coming in the near future for usc and carroll wants bounce before the storm hits. The seahawks have a lot talent on defense so carroll will have plenty to play with

Daniel, as the cliche goes: He who laughs last laughs best. Once again Urban gets the last laugh, and I wish somebody will tell him that good humor is necessary for the health of the soul. A great recruiting class for UF in 2010 is one positive bit of news he could use right now.

Brl, I was thinking along those lines as well. He knows the NCAA is knocking on his door, so he might as well stay one step ahead of them and bail on USC while he has this chance. I have a feeling that the Seahawks will make Carroll an offer he can’t refuse.

  9. brlgator says:

The deal he can’t refuse is 5years 35mil he ll also be team pres and coach. And have an owner who happens to be one of the top 5 richest men in the world. Not a bad way to start. Seahawks need a lil upgrade on offense but they are way better then therE 5-11 record. He s smart

I did think that seeing Carroll at the ESPN BCS pre-game show desk was awry.
